Is It the Wright Law to Punish People?
Capital punishment is a controversial subject that concerns every society. Although some people are for the death penalty, many others are against it for different reasons. Indeed , capital punishment is often considered to be harsh, uncivilized and unfair. To condemn someone to death row means to kill him or her in cold blood. The law that supposed to protect the life of its citizen is now denying him one of the basic fundamental human rights. The agony and the anxiety that the convicted has to suffer before the execution make it cruel. Also the way this execution is implemented is in itself a torture. Whether it is by lethal injection, gas chamber, eclectic chair or by hanging, it is still a slow death . Besides, some of these executions when implemented poorly cause more pain and suffering.
Moreover, some people question the fairness of this sentence. Race, history and ethnicity in some countries might affect the death penalty verdict. In the United States for example, although there are no facts or criminal justice statistics to prove that the death penalty is integrally racist, many people believe that blacks are executed more often than whites. Also this sentence is contingent on the color of the victim.
Furthermore, some people think that the death penalty is unfair because of the quality of the defense team. The court appoints a lawyer to any indigent defendant. Most of these lawyers no only lack experience in dealing with capital punishment cases, but they also tend to rush cases. Indeed, they get paid by the government for every case they represent.
Finally since capital punishment was reinstated in the United State; it has not proven to deter crimes significantly . Actually, a research performed by the FBI in 2003, proved that the South, which applies the death penalty more often, has the highest numbers of crime. In fact, the life sentence has the same effect on crimes as the death sentence. Beside, according to “Death Penalty Information Center” WWW.death penalty info .org since 1973, the total of 119 inmates on death row were released after found innocent.
On other hand, some people think that the death penalty helps restore justice in society. If someone kills a life, his life should be taken away. This kind of punishment will deter crimes, and enforce law and order. The death penalty will also bring a closure to the victim’s family and bring more respect and value to human life.
Besides, some people think that some criminals should never be given another chance. They don’t deserve to live especially if they took someone else’s life. The best way to get rid of them is death. This way society would be living in peace and their punishment would deter other criminals. Moreover, this extreme punishment seems to be a perfect verdict to satisfy the family of the victim and their revenge and help them to heel and move on with their lives.
The death penalty could be considered as the perfect revenge, the right punishment. Yet it could also mean a legal cold blood murder, committed in the name of the law. The same society that protects human rights is denying one of her citizen another chance to live. The condemned, could be proven guilty, yet innocent or psychology challenged.
In Florida the death penalty cost every year $51million more than a life sentence. Every execution cost about $24million. The killings of another life don’t help the victim, nor does it stop other criminals from killing. The most important thing to remember is that capital punishment is irreversible once executed. Besides, the fact that the judicial system is not perfect and that there is always a possibility of human error, it is crucial to try to avoid the death penalty as punishment or as revenge.
-Final draft MUST have works cited page and two properly cited sources
Hi Khalid,
This is an important topic, and you’ve seized on some key problems surrounding the death penalty and how it’s applied. As I mentioned in my reply to your discussion post however, it’s not phrased as a cause/effect argument, which is what the assignment calls for. I’ve identified a few statements in the paper itself that could serve as the basis for such an argument, and I highly recommend you take a look at those and then do the following:
-Go back and read the “Causal Argument Assignment” and “Basics of Causal Arguments” pages in the Week Four content section.
-Go to an on-campus writing lab with this paper and my comments to get some extra help on reworking the arguments to fit the cause/effect format.
-Also, your paper MUST have a Works Cited page in the final draft, with two correctly cited sources. Papers that don’t have a works cited page will be subject to a failing grade, so don’t forget this very important aspect of the assignment.
Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any questions or can’t see my “comment balloons.”
