Why did the United States become involved in the Vietnam conflict?

First
applied to events in Europe, the U.S. policy of containing communism
was also implemented in Asia. The Korean War had been unpopular with the
American public and had ended with a stalemate. Despite that
experience, American officials supported South Vietnam in its fight
against the communists of North Vietnam. By the 1960s, the situation in
Vietnam had worsened, and the United States expanded its commitment in
Southeast Asia.
