What surprises or amazes me about the U.S. Constitution?

During Unit I, we will engage in a close reading of the U.S. Constitution. Many of us think we know the Constitution. Some of us have likely read the Constitution previously. However, it is less likely that we have read the Constitution with a critical eye. I expect students to complete a 3–5 page reflection answering the question: “What surprises or amazes me about the U.S. Constitution?” The paper must be electronically submitted via Brightspace by Thursday, September 9th by 11:59 PM. This assignment is worth 10% of your course grade. I will provide more information on the assignment in future handouts.
Evaluation:
You will be evaluated based on the following:
• How well the reflection offers a clear point of view. The essay presents a clear thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The introductory paragraph serves as a roadmap for the rest of the reflection. For clarity, students are encouraged to underline their thesis statement. Students may identify a single item to emphasize, but may be better served by identifying a broader theme to expand upon throughout the reflection (15%).
• How well the paper supports the argument. The reflection demonstrates careful thought and includes sound logic and evidence. The Constitution (and specific passages) is integrated throughout the reflection. Where necessary, the use of any additional course or outside research supports the point of view of the reflection.
• How well the paper is written. The reflection follows a clear, logical organization to answer the central question. The paper follows the expectations from the course Style Guide. The paper is between 3 and 5 double-spaced pages.
