What shared language and genres does the discourse community use to communicate?
you’ll continue to investigate the concept of a discourse community. Specifically, a discourse community that you belong to. In a 500-word essay, answer the following questions:
What discourse community (outside of school) are you a part of?
What are the limits of membership for your community? In other words, how does one become a member of the discourse community?
What shared purpose makes up that discourse community?
What shared language and genres does the discourse community use to communicate?
How do you adapt your own writing or speaking style to communicate in your discourse community?
In your essay, I encourage you to draw on primary sources related to your discourse community to support your descriptions and reflections. These can be examples of genres of communication (i.e. newsletters, emails, texts, blogs, tweets, etc.). You might also talk about personal experiences with your own engagement in your discourse community.
