What would you do if faced with a young mother to be, who might need your assistance as a nurse, but whose parents have requested minimal assistance? How do you balance your duty as a nurse supervisor with the rights of the parents to guide their daughter’s care? Maintaining objectivity is a struggle when faced with ambiguity, and a ticking clock.
My name is Rian Brown, and as you work through this simulation, I’ll be your Ethics Coach. In addition, you can find hints by clicking the book icon at the top of each page. In this ethical dilemma we are going to explore the similarities and differences between personal values and community values. Specifically, you’ll make choices reflecting multiple conflicting directives: your job duties and the wishes of the patient’s parents.
We’re all individuals who live in community. As we become adults, one of our primary responsibilities is to decide what values and ethical priorities are the most important to us. From the time we were born, our families, teachers/coaches, and other important adults in our world taught us what actions and behaviors we should embrace if we were going to be a “good” person. As an adult, we have the responsibility to choose which of those values and behaviors we’re going to keep and which ones we’re going to adapt.
Now, let’s see how information about the Four Ethical Lenses can help you know how to best make a decision when different parties want you to provide different levels of care, including yourself.
As you resolve the ethical dilemmas in this simulation, you’ll be asked to think about what values are important to you. You’ll then have to choose a course of action that you believe represents the best of those values. To help you with the decision, I’ll introduce you to two skill sets. These analytical skills will make working through the ethical dilemma easier and help you reach a satisfactory resolution of the problem.
Critical Skills
The first skill is learning how to use the four primary ethical perspectives that are used in decision making. These perspectives are called the Four Ethical LensesTM. An overview of the four ethical perspectives can be found under Ethical Info on the menu bar. You’ll look at each ethical dilemma using two different ethical lenses. Your goal is to find the solution that fits each lens best, even if the choice makes you uncomfortable.
The second skill is learning to use a practical and repeatable decision-making method called the Baird Decision ModelTM. An overview of the decision model can be found under Ethical Info on the menu bar. This simple five-step process will help you resolve the ethical dilemmas you face in this game, as well as in everyday life. At the very end of the analysis, you’ll be able to choose the option you like and explain your choice in a brief memo. If you’d like, you can even create your own solution.
Tips for Success
The game is designed to move fairly quickly. Along the way, you’ll have a series of questions to answer. Your score depends on how well you answer these questions. You can find a detailed breakdown of your score by clicking on the Points button at the top of the page. I’ve given you hints on each page to help you improve your score. If you take the time to read the information carefully, your score will be higher.
Remember, if you want more help, plenty of extra information is available. Clicking the book icon at the top of each page will give you more background information about the theory of each ethical lens and ethical decision making. Each item on the menu bar has more information that can help you make a more informed choice.
If you need to take a break, you can log out and your progress will be saved. When you return to the simulation, you’ll be taken to the last page you were on. If you want to see what you chose on other pages, just click Previous at the bottom of the page. When you go back, you can’t change your answer, but you’ll be able to review the information.
Now, let’s see how learning about the Four Ethical Lenses and a simple method for decision-making can help you resolve a typical ethical dilemma. Typical for nurses perhaps, but certainly not easy. Ready?
