Essay Assignment Description

Washington Irving (“Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”)

Use these two pieces of literature and do a compare and contrast essay describing the differences and similarities of the two. Find some way to connect the two pieces, even if they seem versatile in subject or nature. Think about plot, scene, characters, themes, symbols, context, biographical info on the authors, etc.

Also, use at least two sources (historical, biographical, context, or critical analysis) to supplement your understanding of each text.  Use direct quotes, summaries, and paraphrases. No copy and paste.

So: 2 primary sources (the stories, narratives, etc. being compared), and 2 secondary sources (articles, books, webpages, etc. written about the stories by credible authors) per story = 6 total sources.

MLA rules on citation.

Requirements:

Compare/Contrast something that ties two stories together

3 pages (Works Cited Page doesn’t count).

MLA Format

Direct quotes, summaries, and paraphrases of at least four separate credible sources (two secondary sources for each story).

Primary Source Citations (in-text, parenthetical) and a Works Cited Page.
