The Paper: What ethical philosophy do you think is the best way to determine what s moral/immoral? Why? (ie, If you were asked how to live a moral life, which one of the moral theories makes the most sense to you? Why does it make more sense than the others?
(Divine Command Theory, Subjective Relativism, Cultural Relativism, Emotivism, Ethical Egoism, Act-Utilitarianism, Rule-Utilitarianism, Kantian Ethics, Natural Law, Virtue Ethics)
You can t be a Utilitarian on one issue and a Kantian on another.
Make an argument State your position and defend it.
- Intro Paragraph: (about page)
- Start with an attention-getter that leads into the topic of the paper.
- Finish your Intro with one complete (and underlined) sentence, explicitly stating your position (your essay s thesis statement. For example: In this paper, I will argue that virtue ethics is the best moral theory. )
- Body Paragraphs: (2-3 pages)
- Explain why you think this theory is better than the others we ve discussed. The purpose here isn t to explain the workings of this theory. Assume the reader understands all the theories. You want to focus on making an argument that convinces readers that they should follow your theory.
- Identify what you think are the strongest criticisms of this theory (at least 2) and explain why you think those criticisms are negligible (why they aren t strong enough to make you give up the theory).
- Conclusion Paragraph: (about page) a. Recap/summarize the thesis and main points of your paper. b. Finish with a memorable/catchy ending.
