In the first part of the course, we have examined the growth and development of urban areas in the United States, focusing on the rise of the industrial city starting in the late 19th century and the transition to the highly decentralized “post-industrial city”(or urban areas) in the 20th century.

For your first exam write a minimum 6 page double-spaced essay that addresses the following questions:

1) Explain how urban areas in the U.S. have been affected by the rise of industrialism; suburbanization (especially after WWII); and the transition to a post-industrial economy after 1970
2) Describe and assess the consequences and effectiveness of various efforts and strategies to revitalize central cities, including urban renewal as well as more recent efforts under post-industrialism

Your essay should be based on all relevant course material (lecture notes, readings, weekly discussions, etc.), and you will be graded in part in terms of how effectively and extensively you incorporate readings from the Teaford and Glaeser books! You should incorporate and refer to these readings explicitly in your essay, using citations as appropriate.
