Comments/Feedback:
Exie, Thank you for submitting your comprehensive exam. You demonstrated your understanding of doctoral level work in your discussion of ethics. You have passed question 4 of the exam.
You will need to repeat questions 1, 2, and 3. Detailed information on those questions is written below as well as additional comments in each of those papers.
The following are general feedback tips related to your paper:
All exams should be submitted to Taskstream for additional feedback. In review of Taskstream, I did not see any of your papers submitted. Please submit each document so that I am able to upload feedback for you.
- Your paper should begin with an NCU cover page. After that cover page, then the coversheet can be included. Each of the questions for the exam should be written in entirety on that cover sheet.
- Pages 89 and 90 in your APA manual outline when to use a semicolon within your paper. You are to use a semicolon to separate two independent clauses that are not joined by a conjunction or to separate items in a series that is already separated by commas. Within your paper, you utilize a number of semicolons when commas are more appropriate.
- Make sure your citations match your references and your references match your citations. For example, in your first paper, you have Drazen, 1994 listed in an in text citation however in the references, you list Drazen&Haust. Page 177 of your APA manual outline the APA rulings on citations within your paper. All names of authors should be included unless there are six or more at which time, you can use et al.
- Please review page 88 in your APA manual which summarizes the need for a comma when you are separating three or more items in sequence.
- Work to limit quotes to one quote for every 10 pages of written material.
- If you have two or more references within the same citation, they should be listed in alphabetical order as they would appear on the reference page. Review page 177 in your APA manual for more on this ruling.
- When you are listing items, you would want to use lower case letters as well as parentheses such as (a). Review page 64 in your APA manual.
- Review the formatting of references which begins on page 198 in your APA manual. Book titles should be in italics. Utilize first and middle initials for names rather than the whole first name.
In regards to question 1, you summarized each of the three theories that included social-cultural, constructivist, and experiential. You discussed each of those theories and also related them to each other noting how they differ in philosophy. The question relates to three distinct parts. First you are to describe the theories which you completed. The second part of the questions asks for you to compare and contrast those theories with each other. This was not completed within its own section of the paper but rather incorporated within your discussion of each theory. One suggestion would be to use subheadings to not only outline each of the theories into its own section but to also distinguish a section where you are comparing and contrasting the theories. The third part of the paper asked for you to select one of the theories mentioned within the first part of your paper and select five additional peer-reviewed sources to note how theory would add to your understanding of your specialization. While you spoke of Piaget’s model, you utilized the same resources you had already used within the first half of your paper to relate to this area. It is here that additional sources needed to be utilized to further define your understanding of this theory in relation to your specialization. Again, you should utilize subheadings to note this section of your paper as well. You will need to repeat question 1 of the exam.
In question 2, you were to use peer reviewed sources to note how theory guides and informs practice. You spoke of early childhood education and the impact of all individuals around a child can have in their learning process. You describe different techniques used within the educational structure of young children. One aspect to keep repeating is how theory can guide practice. How does theory relate to the techniques you are describing within your paper? The second part of the paper asked for your to identify at least an additional five peer reviewed articles and address how one of the theories discussed in paper 1 was applied. Your paper was not clear in this regard. Each of the five articles you identified should have been tied back to the theory that you noted. Within your paper, it was unclear which theory you were using. In addition, while you may have summarized articles, they did not tie back to the theory as noted in the requirements for this question. You will need to repeat question 2.
In question 3, you were to select five empirical articles from peer reviewed journals and go through each one describing such things as the research problem, purpose, threats to validity, type of study design, and findings. Within your paper, you began to write more about play of children rather than of distinct articles. You noted how electronics have interfered with play but you incorporated all of your research articles together in telling this story and it was not clear what five distinct research articles you had found. The second part of the paper was developed for you to select one of the first five studies and redesign it. What would you do differently? What methodology would you use and why? What research questions would you have? I am not sure if you did not understand the questions fully as you responded to it. You will need to repeat question 3. When you repeat the question, you will need to use subheadings to clearly note each of the five articles that you are reviewing. Each article should be reviewed under its own subheading answering the questions as noted within question 3. Then, you will select one of those questions and redesign it answering the questions as stated under the second part of question 3. Again, you will need to repeat question 3 for the exam.
In question 4, you focused your response on the importance of making sure that children are treated correctly when they are involved in research. You discussed the importance of care and integrity when conducting research with children and how important it is to be careful of the surroundings and culture a child is in as well. You mentioned different aspects such as plagiarism, working with a mentor, and the importance of the IRB within your paper. These areas could have been expanded upon more to further give definitions of each area. Again, I would suggest the use of subheadings within your paper to help to distinguish aspects of your written work such as risk assessment, plagiarism, and mistakes and negligence to name a few. Overall, you have addressed the areas of ethics in dealing with children. Congratulations, you have passed question 4.
