Discussion 2 –Breastfeeding

Making the decision to breastfeed is a very personal matter. It’s also one that’s likely to elicit strong opinions from family and friends. If the time comes that you are a parent each of you will have to decide to breastfeed or bottle feed your baby. As nutrition professionals it is our responsibility to understand the pros and cons of both breastfeeding and bottle-feeding and guide our clients to best choice for them. The benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and infants are well established.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics first published their position paper on Promoting and Supporting breastfeeding in 2009 and it was updated in 2015. The Academy’s Practice paper supports the Academy’s Position paper. The practice paper was created to provide registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition professionals with guidelines and resources to promote and support breastfeeding. Read each of these papers before beginning this discussion post.

Respond to the following prompts to complete your Online “Breastfeeding” Discussion (earn 1- 25 pts). Your first post must be approximately 350 words in length, composed in full sentences, with grammar and spelling checked.

Discussion Questions:

Have you had any direct experiences related to breastfeeding or have you known a close friend or relative who has? What was your/their experience like? How has that experience or the lack thereof contributed to your own position on the issue of breastfeeding? (3 pts)
The Position paper discussed the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position that exclusive breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition and health protection for the first 6 months of life, and that breastfeeding with complementary foods from 6 months until at least 12 months of age is the ideal feeding pattern for infants. The Practice paper was created to provide guidelines and resources to promote and support breastfeeding. How can the information in the two papers be used together to address the important contribution breastfeeding makes to the health of women, children, and infants and the future of our nation. (5 pts)
Select a peer-reviewed article on the benefits of breastfeeding. (This is a scholarly article or a scientific article. A peer-reviewed article is reviewed by a committee of professionals in the field and revised by the investigator/author before publishing. You can find peer-reviewed articles on the library database (library.arizona.edu) or through PubMed. Non-scholarly articles will not be accepted as sources for this discussion). Your article must be unique (cannot be used by another student). Include the full citation for your article. State the major findings of the study and why these findings are important. How does this article inform, enrich or otherwise affect your understanding of the topic of breastfeeding? (5 pts)

Response Posts:

3. You are required to respond to at least two other student postings. Be substantive and follow up on your comments with why you think what you do. Do you agree or disagree and why? Do you have questions based on the postings? Use references from podcasts, readings and activities that support your position. Be sure to properly cite your references. These responses should be thought out, not ‘I like your post’ or ‘I agree with you’. Each person needs to make original responses. Each post should be approximately 150 words. You cannot repeat a response; therefore you will need to think about your comments. Because of this, the earlier you post the less likely you are to have trouble coming up with a novel response. All posts must be appropriate and respectful.
Your first post must be made by July 19, 2015 and your second and 3rd posts must be made by July 21, 2015.
