Stockholders’ …1. A simple pendulum is made from a string that is 0.65m in length with a mass of 0.2kg attached to the free end. The mass is pulled to one side through a small angle and released from rest. A) What is the angular frequency period of the pendulum? If the mass were doubled, to 0.4kg, what would be the new angular frequency and period? B) How long would it take for the mass to reach its greatest speed? C) If the pendulum were placed on the moon, would its period be greater or less than on the earth? Why? Gravity of moon = 1.67m/s^2 2. An organ pipe is 4 feet long and closed at one end. A) Calculate the wavelength and frequency of the first two harmonics. B) Draw the standing waves that correspond to the first two harmonics, indicating Nodes (N) and Antinodes(A).
3.You are standing on the sidewalk as a police car recedes from you at a speed of 20m/s. The car’s siren has a fixed frequency of 400Hz. At the same time a second police car is approaching you. The second car is going at the same speed and has an identical siren. A) What frequencies do you hear from teach police car? B) What is the frequency difference, if any, between the two observed frequencies?
4. A physical pendulum is constructed froma uniform thin rod of length L suspended from one end. The center of gravity for such a rod lies at the midpoint of its length. A) Derive the equation of motion for this physical pendulum and, from that, determine its period and angular frequency, assuming only small angle oscillations.B) What would be the length of a simple pendulum that has this same period? Gravity is the only force acting on the penduum and, by definition, can be considered to be acting at its center of gravity.
5. A mass hanging from a verticle spring and a simple pendulum each have a period of oscillation of 1 second on the earth. If you were to take these devices to another planet where the acceleration due to gravity is greater than on earth, state whether the period of each device is greater than 1 sec, less than 1 sec, or the same. Explain your reasoning.
