Our identities are developed through the outcomes of conversations we have with other individuals (Stewart, 2012). I believe that when we communicate with people we start to see a person more than what they are on the outside. You know more in depth with a person than just categorizing people, because of what you think about them. According to Stewart (2012), identity or self is made up of interlocking features that mark how persons behave and respond to other (Stewart, 2012). Social expectations that we have of ourselves and others are derived from labels that are established because of your identity (Stewart, 2012). It amazes me how we think we know an individual, because of what we see on the outside without having a conversation with that individual. Communication builds identity through two steps which are to become familiar with those identity issues that are important to the individual and second need to learn to integrate new information into your identity in ways that are healthy (Stewart, 2012). Step one is to become aware of your identity issues in which our identity is implicated through difficult conversations in which we feel anxious, fearful, or tentative in which are our sensitivities are triggered (Stewart, 2012). The second step is adopting the stance in which you are getting a clear picture of what is true about yourself (Stewart, 2012). I feel that we have to learn more about ourselves and who are and accept who we are. We have to know that we will make mistakes; intentions are complex, and contributing to problems (Stewart, 2012). Sigmund Feud thinks of society as made up of individuals’ selves who are each working out their inner intentions (Stewart, 2012). We intend to think of the self as primarily a private province, an inner dominion of personal thoughts, values, strivings, emotions and desires.
