Sport and Intersectionality

This discussion addresses module outcomes 1 and 2. In this discussion, you will focus on the concept of intersectionality (Links to an external site.), which is a new term in social science referring to the way that social identifications or statuses overlap and influence each other in shaping one’s life experience. For example, focusing upon a person’s race as a key social status is important, but it is more useful to analyze race within the context of other social identification categories such as gender, religion, income, sexuality, and other key social variables. This highlights the way in which our life experiences are unique, as we all encounter these intersections in different ways. We all fit uniquely into a combination of racial, sexual, gender, economic, and religious/spiritual categories. With respect to sport, we again see the confluence of various social statuses and identifications. The discussion below will ask you to refer to our reading and video content for the module, and engage in a detailed discussion about how intersectionality can be understood through sport.

Before participating in this discussion, make sure you have completed all video and reading content for the module. Using as many of the module readings and other module learning materials as possible, please respond to the following questions in your posts:
• Giving direct reference to at least three of our assigned readings and at least two videos, analyze one case study of a famous athlete, coach, or owner that demonstrates the concept of intersectionality.
• Specifically citing our reading material not mentioned in your previous response, explain what might be done to alleviate the incredible racial and gender disparity between the team owners and coaches of professional and collegiate sports, and those who play such sports. Be specific in your response.
• Finally, both the Cochrane interview with Billie Jean King and the US Women’s National Soccer team lawsuit described in the module notes illustrate that equal pay for gender different athletes is an ongoing problem. In this, do you find that sport is an institution apart from the broader US society, or roughly similar to the gender pay inequity found in US society?
