Notes:

A bonded pair homeless dog and cat ends up in a high-‐kill shelter where he witnesses dogs and cat’s being euthanized, and where he meets Mary, who gives them names and will not give up on them also fights for them to be in the same kennel. Both get adopted for a short while but are being surrendered again. After weeks in the shelter (for the second time) they grow more and more depressed. Again they witness animals being euthanized surrendered, freezing in their kennel waiting to find a family. Meanwhile a camera follows Mary on her day to day in the shelter and through the city meeting people with dogs, puppies, pure breeds, mixes and witnessing people buying dogs in shops (..). Finally one day a family with another dog arrives at the shelter and adopts them both.

I think it’s important to raise the question how ethical euthanasia is and what the main problem of the pet overpopulation. During the plot you will see why and how people surrender dogs in the shelter, which dogs get euthanized or adopted, how many are brought back and how the people working in those environments deal with it. So it’s a story about all animals told through the eyes of the cat and dog and the volunteer.

Camera Equipment:? I want the story to be told hald through normal cameras and the other half through cameras attached to the animal and Mary, as if we are seeing through their eyes.

What is unique about the story?
The angle from which it is supposed to be told, seeing the whole plot develop through both the eyes of the two animals and the volunteer gives a different and more touching perspective. I think that not only putting dogs in the main focus, but also having a cat as part of the story is unique because usually documentaries or short films about shelter animals are mostly about the dogs…… etc.

Some statistics.. (research more)
Shelter animals and the pet overpopulation is a big issue in the US. 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters every year, 1.2 dogs and 1.4 cats, each year; 2.7 million of them are euthanized. 800 dogs and cats are killed each hour and roughly every 8 seconds a dog or cat are sent to an animal shelter.

It’s estimated that 70-‐80 million dogs and 74-‐96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-‐47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-‐37% have a cat.

Rather than just lecturing the viewer it’s supposed to tell a story, from 3 different
angles where each character and protagonist evolves and goes

Audience ?

Who backed by a lot of non-‐profits, brands etc. ?
Most pet food brands and or other companies that offer pet services support the
adoption of shelter dogs and donate or raise awareness towards the issue.
