Setting & Point of View
Directions
Preparing for the Discussion
Read and annotate the Setting & Point of View stories and watch the Setting & Point of View PowerPoint before beginning this discussion.
Then, choose your favorite story of the 3 and/or the one which gave you the most to think/write about. I recommend reviewing your story annotations and your Setting & Point of View Response before beginning the discussion.
Review all of the sources on the Setting & Point of View Discussion Resources page.
Creating the Initial Discussion Response
Consider the setting of the story and how it affected what happened in the story. What would change if the story were set in another time? Another place? Another social class (rich instead of poor, powerless instead of powerful, etc.)?
Consider the point of view of the story. How might our perceptions change if a different character were telling the story? How would their viewpoint and personality affect the story’s meaning and impact?
Then, do either of the following:
Pick a new setting (a different time, geography, physicality, or atmosphere) for the story OR
Pick a new point of view (different character or perspective; i. e., turn 1st person into 3rd person) for your chosen story.
After that, write at least a 250-word excerpt from the story using its new setting/POV OR at least a 250-word continuation of the story using its new setting/ POV. Make sure to write your excerpt like you are writing part of a story: In other words, don’t tell me how the story would change, show me.
Finally, write at least a 50-word reflection on what you learned from rewriting the excerpt. Answer both of the following:
How did this exercise alter your view of the story or characters?
What did it teach you about the importance of setting or point of view?
Your total response should be at least 300 words (250-word excerpt and 50-word reflection). You may write more if you wish.
You can simply type your response into the discussion post or you can put your response in a Word file and attach it to the post.
