Review the marking criteria as your guide when writing your journal.
The journal has 3 key elements:
- Decide on the elements from the theory you wish to discuss – maybe 1 – 3 key elements
- You need to discuss these elements using examples which link to the theory
- You need to add your personal opinions of the theory/examples.
Do NOT simply copy and paste theory from the powerpoints or just list the elements, the key focus of the journal is a discussion which incorporates some elements of theory, linked to examples and overlaid with your personal opinion(s).

Week X – Change Management
This week I learned about Kotters 8 steps of change. I thought it was interesting that the steps could be used to overcome the resistance to change which naturally exists in all of us, and in organizations. I learnt that the process of change is a difficult and requires a consistent organization wide effort to introduce successfully. If you don’t follow one of the steps correctly then the whole process may fail. One of the steps to change which I found most interesting was communication. Communication involves ensuring the vision for change is understood by all members of the organization. Communication may take the form of newsletters, informal discussions, formal meetings, staff emails or speeches from management. It is important that all of this communication repeats the message for change.
A good example of communication in practice is Barack Obama’s American presidential campaign. In this campaign he constantly used the change message of “YES we can” and “change we can believe in”. By using these messages he was able to introduce the common idea of shared change which was held by a wide public audience. He used the word “we” to ensure that the public felt as though they were involved in the change effort. He also repeated the same message of change often. I thought that he used communication very effectively to allow people to understand and remember his ideas.
