Renaissance and middle ages

Write an essay of 1000 words (if it runs to more, that is okay), half of which is devoted to the Middle Ages and its literature and half of which is devoted to the Renaissance and its literature. Your job in the first half is to take the idea of otherworldliness and to use two literary works from the Middle Ages to define and illustrate that idea. The best papers will go beyond simply giving examples of spiritual living and the life to come in heaven to using those examples and the discussion of them in the paper to bring out complexity with this idea of otherworldliness. Your job in the second half of the paper is to take the idea of dividedness or a dual vision of life and to use two literary works from the Renaissance to define and illustrate that idea. The best papers will go beyond simply giving examples of both the secular and spiritual values of the Renaissance to using the examples and the discussion of them in the paper to bring out complexity with this idea of dividedness. Here are the ground rules:  Clear, correct, concise, college-level writing is required. Apply what you were taught in freshman comp: title the paper, begin with an introduction and thesis, use topic sentences. Proofread for incomplete sentences and typos.  For the Renaissance half of the paper, you should consider both the poems we have studied (the one by Sidney, the short poem by Ben Jonson) as one work. The other Renaissance work should be either the Erasmus selection or the Machiavelli selection.  Assume the reader of your paper has read the works you are discussing. No summary/paraphrasing is needed. You want to analyze, not summarize the works. Your paper must refer to the material studied in class during unit two, not to other parts from those works not assigned for class.  You may show me a draft of the paper for feedback and a free grade.  No outside sources are needed—this is a take-home test and should present your own thoughts; if you do consult any outside sources, including online sources, for some clarifying purpose, you are obligated to cite them correctly in the paper. In other words, obey the plagiarism warning on the syllabus.
