PAD 3003 Speech Essay Overview

 

Assignment:

Students will be required to write a concise, well-articulated essay based on a speech that features multiple elements covered in the course. Essays should be at least 5 ½ pages and no longer than 7 pages in length, not including references, tables, graphs, etc. Essays should be double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with standard one inch margins. All references should be cited according to the American Psychology Association (APA) (6th ed.) style in author-date format with a separate reference section located at the end of the essay. It is highly recommended that students consult the citation guides provided online

 

Details:

Students will be asked to pick a significant political speech that resonates with them and be able to explain events preceding and after its oration. They will be asked to summarize the content of the speech and the impact that it had. Furthermore, they will discuss why they chose a particular speech. If there is another speech that students would like to use instead, students are able to do so with the instructor’s approval. To build on course content covered from the start of the semester up through the March 22nd due date, the speeches should relate to at least one of the following Holzer and Schwester chapters that we have covered in class.

 

Content:

Remember, the purpose of this assignment is for you to analyze and critically think about a problem or set of problems that a particular speech aims to address. I want you to provide the context of what the problem was at the time, what the speech entailed, and what events happened afterward. I also want you to tell me WHY this resonated with you. Make this essay YOURS. I want to hear your voice combined with the implementation of theory and issues discussed in class and / or in the readings. While a grading rubric will accompany this form (and can be found on FSU Blackboard under “Assignments,” the main points of your essay should contain the following:

 

  1. Formatting, Clarity, and Style
  2. Organization of Paper
  3. Summary of Problem(s) Preceding the Speech
  4. What Happened Afterward
  5. What Speech Means to You! Why Did You Pick It?
  6. Bibliography / Sources

 

Grading:

Ideally, I hope that one of the speeches resonates with you and writing the essay will not be too difficult because of a sparked interest. You will do very well if you are able to concisely articulate the problem that was occurring before the speech, summarize what the speech entailed, explain the impact that the speech had, and why you felt so strongly about doing it.

The essay will count as 15% of your final grade, and will be worth 15 points overall. Late essays will receive a 5% reduction per day of the paper’s possible maximum score and will receive zero credit after five days. A rubric will be provided to students to provide transparency and understanding regarding the grading process.
