persuasive essay
In this unit, Unit 3, you will be making rhetorical choices in order to write a persuasive essay. In particular, you will focus on how genre can best convey your message to a particular audience.
The first step you will take is to choose an issue or problem from the list below. You should pick a topic that interests you and that you already know a little about.
Possible topics:
• Language (English as the national language, Ebonics, Spanglish, Standard American English, etc)
• Governmental programs to help the poor (welfare, food stamps, medicaid, etc)
• Immigration
• Gender inequalities (pay gap, female gamers, etc)
• Disease outbreaks and/or vaccinnations
• Why we enjoy certain popular culture genres (reality TV, supernatural, etc)
• Beauty / appearance / self-acceptance
• Ancestry / tradition
For Short Writing Assignment #3, you will write ~2 pages about your topic. You should write what you know of the topic, but you should also do some basic research about your topic. Many of these issues have been in the news recently, so you shouldn’t have too much difficulty. However, you should use reliable, credible sources for your information. We’ll talk about what this means in class. Because you will be using sources beyond your own brain, you will need to have a Works Cited page.
The next step you will take is to choose an audience for your essay. Who do you think would benefit from learning about your topic?
Once you have chosen your topic and your audience, you will choose a genre/form in which to share your message. You should be strategic when choosing your genre – which one do you think will most effectively convince your chosen audience? You will choose a genre from the list below. You will need to explain your choice of audience and genre in your online journal for Week 12.
Possible genres:
• Anzaldua genre: Personal, divided into sections, mix of languages
• Swift genre: Business proposal and satire
• Goodman genre: Sketch of a character, ironic portrait of a personality type
• Gladwell genre: Divided into sections, rules, history
• King genre: Humor, pop culture references
