Week – 1

Since I am good with computers, so I decided to do an internship as IT infrastructure internee in an international petrochemical company in Saudi Arabia named Sipchem. When I arrived on the first day on the job, I meet the person named Mr. Belal Alshammari, under whom I was going to work. In early hours, I was given a brief introduction about the company and what it do and also about my duties. I have to admit that I was wrong about what an IT internee will be suppose to do. To me it was about helping people use different software but it was more about hardware and management of that. So in the first week, I was assigned to upgrade all the PC’s to the latest Windows Operating System 8 and also install other required software. I was given a list of 100 computers to upgrade. When I got the list, I was worried that it’s going to take my whole internship to do but again I was surprised that in an enterprise, things don’t work like they do in home. We have an image of all the OS and required software on external drive and we just have to copy that image via an enterprise software, which will take maximum 15 min to install everything on any particular system. Plus I was also introduced to the system, which was suppose to manage the inventory of all the PC’s in their offices and I was suppose to update information about each information about the PC e.g; which OS is installed and any other software and some other information like who is using this system etc. I was able to complete this job within a week, which also surprised me and I was feeling relax because everything went as it was expected without any major problem.

Week – 2

In the second week, I was given the task to assigned to work server room. While working on server room, there are very less public dealing expect other IT staff members. My job with another internee this week was to install couple of new servers, install the OS and required software and move the printing server software on one and stores management software on the other server and make it live. I have to be honest and I did not have the idea about these software and even how to setup the servers but admin in the server room really helped us understand the whole thing. He also gave us the manual to do the whole thing, which really helped us. After installing this, we were given the tasks to replace any hard-drive in the rack if it fail. This was my first ever experience in any kind of computer server room and I was surprised by the scale of it. So my whole second week was spend there.

Week-3

In the third week, I was placed at the help desk to attend the calls and help either on the phone or visit the person office physically and help them fix their computer and make sure people can work without any major difficulty. This week was very hectic as I was always on the move fixing people problems and I was surprised to know a different kind of people who kind of just use the computer to do their daily jobs but have very little information about computers otherwise. I had to fix the problem from screen resolution to hard disk failure.

Week – 4

While working on the help desk, I came to know that lot of people were getting issues with their monitors after the first week upgrade especially screen resolution was changing without any action on user part and I informed my supervisor about that and also suggested the fix, which was to upgrade the driver for graphics card. So he assigned me and the other internee to check all the computers and fix this particular issue. There were about 300 computers which we had to fix and it took us about 5 days to complete the job. While fixing that, everyone was also brining their other minor issues to fix, which we did try to fix.

Observations and Suggestion:

While working as IT infrastructure internee, I came to know people have very limited know about the machines they have to work all day long. So it is very important that these people are given proper training about the machines they are using so that they can fix minor issues themselves.
