Orangizational change

Orangizational change

You will research a planned organizational change that is currently taking place in your respective

workplaces. Using the concepts, theories, and models presented in the text and literature, you will conduct

an in-depth analysis of your selected organizational change. If a workplace planned organizational change

is not accessible to you, you should identify a current organizational change (either in your local

community or at the national level) that you can analyze. If you choose this second approach, you must be

sure you can gain access to a great deal of information about the change, either through interviews of

those leading and responding to the change, or through the media (newspapers, manuscripts, internet,

radio, and television, etc.) or both.

The paper should include the three parts below:

Part 1: Introduction (1 page)

Present the organization of your paper. Then, briefly describe the planned change you investigated and

why. Following this, discuss the method you used to gather data, i.e., how you observed the change and

whom you interviewed and why. (Interview 2 people in your organization who are stakeholders of

the change (i.e., change agent; change recipient(s). You should develop an interview protocol and

interview these two people involved with the change, ideally a person who is leading the change and a

person who is responding to the change.

When discussing your selected planned change, focus on the problem surrounding the change: how did

the change emerge to be an issue that needs to be addressed and why? Also, discuss the significance of

the problem: why is the change important and what are the anticipated benefits and potential adverse

ramifications of implementing the change? Use your own observations in addition to the organizational

change literature to support your arguments. Link this to the Pillars of Change.

Part 2: Analysis of Planned Change (8-10 pages)

Organize this part of the assignment into four sections: Dynamics of the Change: (1) content of change,

(2) process of change (include discussion of the role of the change agent), (3) context of change, (4)

reaction to change, (5) With each section, you must support your arguments by integrating readings (both

inside and outside the course) and responses from your interviews.

Dynamics of Change:

Section 1

Content of Change (1-2 pages): Address the question: what is the substance of the change. Describe the

content of the change. Does this link to one of the Pillars of Change in The Fourth Way?

Section 2

Process of Change (1-2 pages): Address the question: how are change agents leading the change and

why? Does this link to Sustainable leadership/distributed leadership as discussed in Catalyst 1?

Section 3

Context of Change (1-2 pages): Address the question: what contextual factors are driving how change

agents are leading the change and how change recipients are responding to the change. Is the context

supportive of a collaborative culture or a learning community (Principle 3 in The Fourth Way?)

Section 4

Reaction to Change (2 pages): Address the question: how are change recipients responding to the change

and why. Include reference to supportive environments to assist with the reactions as in Principle 3.

Part 3: Conclusions and Recommendations (2 pages)

Students should extract and draw conclusions about the change from their analyses. Students should

present at four-five conclusions and discuss each, drawing from the content of their analyses in addition

to the literature. Students should also present key recommendations for making the change successful

using the concepts, theories, and models discussed in the course.

The paper should be 10-12 pages in length (No more than 12 pages), be double-spaced, use 12-pt Times

Roman font, have one-inch top, bottom, left, and right margins, and adhere to guidelines stipulated in the

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Sixth Edition).

Assignment will be assessed using the rubric below:

A4 – Organizational Change Research Paper Rubric

(40 Points)

The following criteria will be considered when evaluating your

organizational research paper.

_____/2 Focus/Rationale The rationale for choosing the organizational change is

clearly delineated. There is a comprehensive description of

the problem surrounding the organizational change: how it

emerged and why, why the change is important, and the

anticipated benefits of its implementation. The methods

used to gather data about the change are described and

Hargreaves’ Five Pillars of Purpose and Partnership is used

as an overall frame to discuss the current change and future

practices encompassing sustainability and sustainable

leadership.

_____/25 Analysis There is effective use of the results of any interviews,

observations, and research and theory to discuss the content,

process, and context of the change, and reaction to the

change. The dynamics of the change (i.e., the interactions

among all the four subsystems (content, process, context,

reaction) is clearly presented and analyzed in relation to

Hargreaves’ model. There is skillful use of direct quotes

from the interviews to support arguments posed by the

student.

Several additional readings are integrated into the

discussion (at least three readings from the course readings

and three readings outside the course).

_____/5 Findings Conclusions are based on evidence derived from both the

interviews and the research and theories identified in the

literature. Four-five conclusions are presented along with at

least three recommendations for making the change

successful and for future integration of Hargreaves’ model.

_____/3 Organization Organization includes the definition of unfamiliar terms, a

logical progression of ideas, appropriate transitions, and

paragraph structure. The interview protocol should be

included as an appendix.

_____/5 Format Paper is 13-15 pages in length (No more than 15 pages), is double-spaced, uses 12-pt Times Roman font, has one-inch top, bottom, left, and right margins, and adheres to the standards presented in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Sixth Edition).
