Subject Learning Outcomes Assessed A) Appreciate concepts, theories and models of reflection, specifically on practice B) Articulate a critical awareness of self as a health professional in the context of a variety of patterns of knowledge such as the personal, empirical, aesthetic and ethical. 2 | P a g e Assessment 1 – Reflection: Detailed Instructions The purpose of this assessment is to provide a reflection using a ‘ways of knowing’ approach, in order to help you identify the empirical, aesthetic, ethical and personal factors that can influence your practice. To be able to undertake this reflection, you must have read Barbara Carper’s “Fundamental Patterns of Knowing in Nursing” (available through the Moodle site and library ereadings) and undertake the relevant learning activities in the Topic 2: Ways of Knowing module on the Moodle site. Think about an event in your practice. It does not have to be a critical incident or a negative event. It can be anything that happened that has stayed with you, and something that you felt good about or that you feel you did well. It should be an event that you were actively involved in. It can be related to any part of your professional life, as a student, clinician, teacher etc. Refer to the discussion in the Moodle site for advice about constitutes an event. USING THE TEMPLATE PROVIDED (page 3 of this document) briefly describe this event (300 words), then referring to Carper’s article, identify what you think were all the ‘ways of knowing’ that informed this event (1000 words). Conclude by reflecting how this exercise has made you think differently about your practice (200 words). Use the template to structure your reflection. References: You may use any readings from the first four modules in the Moodle site to support your argument in this assessment, and must include the Carper article. When referring to any of the readings in your work, use in text citations as per the Harvard referencing system. All sources used in the text must be listed in a bibliography or reference list, formatted as per the Harvard system. 3 | P a g e Assessment 1 – Reflection: Template 1. Event description (300 words) Briefly explain the event you are going to analyse. Tell the reader what happened, who did it happen to, what did you do, how did you feel, what you thought, what was the outcome. 2. Ways of Knowing (1000 words) Consider the ways of knowing that informed this event. Use Carper’s ways of knowing as subheadings. Even though it is possible that one form of knowledge dominated, you must show evidence of having considered the impact of each, and if it is not relevant, explain why not. a) Empirics (identify the relevant science, medicine, policy, procedure etc.) b) Esthetics (identify the elements of your practice that you ‘just knew’, the intuition, the care, empathy etc.) Think about how this is different to the empirics. c) Personal (identify the ways in which you bought your personal self into this event. How did your values, your ‘therapeutic use of self’ influence the way this event unfolded?) d) Ethical (identify the ethical and political aspects of this event. Where the patients rights upheld, if not why not, etc.) 3. Conclusion (200 words) Summarise your assignment by reflecting on how using ‘ways of knowing’ has helped you understand your practice in new ways. 4. References. See note above in Instructions. Use Harvard author, date as the referencing system. 4 | P a g e SNPG950: Reflection For Practice Assessment 1 – Reflection: Marking Guide Criteria Fail Pass Credit Distinction High Distinction Marks Description of event, outlining what happened & to whom, what you did, thought and felt. 0- 12 12.5 -16 16.5- 18.5 19-21 21.5- 25 /25 Analysis of the empirical, aesthetic, personal and ethical ‘ways of knowing’ and their application to this event 0- 19 20- 25.5 26- 29.5 30- 33.5 34-40 /40 Reflection on how using ‘ways of knowing’ has helped you understand your practice in new ways 0- 12 12.5 -16 16.5- 18.5 19-21 21.5- 25 /25 Written expression, argument & presentation. 0- 4 5-6 6.5-7 7.5-8 8.5-10 /10 This assignment is worth 40% of the total assessment for this subject. To be able to undertake this assessment, you must have participated in the learning activities from Topics 6 to 10 on the Moodle site, which provide information on the preparation of reflective portfolios and the significance of history for health care. You will develop this portfolio throughout the subject and are required to submit five separate, but connected, items for assessment (plus a reference list). Specific instructions for each item are provided below. 1. Representation of yourself and the values you consider important in your practice. This representation can be as creative as you are comfortable with, including multi media, audio, visual, photography, drawing, poetry, YouTube links, or any other medium to be negotiated with Subject Coordinator (500 words) 2. Reflection of an event in your practice using the Rolfe model. Refer to the module on the Moodle site for information and discussion about using this model to structure a reflection. Draw on your knowledge about yourself and your values to consider the What, So What, Now What of this event (1000 words in .doc format) 3. Analyse a current media (newspaper) article that addresses the same health care issue as your event. From this article, consider how social and historical factors have impacted your practice in this area. How does this knowledge affect how you approach people in your care? (700 words +photo/scan/eversion of media article) 4. Evaluation of how this portfolio process and the items you have presented demonstrate a coherent approach to your practice. Summarise the elements presented above and consider how your values and approach to your practice can be informed by critical reflection that considers the social and historical context of health care issues. Think broadly about how your position in society as a health care professional can make you an agent of social change (300 words in .doc format) 5. Reference list.
