Decision Support and Innovative Informatics Tools Discussion: NURS 8210 Week 7
Assess the applications of the technology, noting the benefits and potential challenges of the innovation.
As a nurse, the goal is to give safe, effective patient care, and improve healthcare. Courville (2017) discussed between 1995 and 2004 the joint commission reported medication errors, delays in treatment, wrong-site surgeries, and sentinel events was caused from communication failure. Research has shown that smartphones are a cheap and quicker tool to improve doctor to patient interaction, reducing costs and improving care for patients (Courville, 2017; Whitlow, 2013). Nursing and Health Care Informatics Tools: Telehealth, Robotics, and Decision Support – NURS 8210 Decision Support and Innovative Informatics Tools Essay. They can instantly connect the entire care team with the data and tools.
In nursing home facility, using smartphones can improve interprofessional communication and enhance workflow. Development in technology has improved over the last decade and more secure low-cost communication can be used to text message, share photos and attachments, call clinicians, video chat, document, and be used as a learning tool. It can be used anywhere, anytime. There are few studies regarding the benefits and challenges of smartphones. Nursing and Health Care Informatics Tools: Telehealth, Robotics, and Decision Support – NURS 8210 Decision Support and Innovative Informatics Tools Essay.
Courville (2017) conclusion stated smartphones improved “time management, optimized resources, team unity, performance metrics, job satisfaction, and self-learning and professional development” (p.5). There are possible barriers that may arise as a result of incorporating the system in the organization that may hinder the way smartphones operate. Potential challenges could be smartphones depending on Wi-Fi networking and cellular networks. When many users congest the network, connectivity could slow down, or if there is an outage the smartphone would not be able to connect to a network. Another potential challenge would be risk for data lost or device is stolen. Larson, Vice President of Diagnotes (2018) stated that backup and information is stored in a secured cloud. In case of loss or theft, software developers created remote wiping and disabling that can remotely clean or disable the program. Another potential challenge would be the risk of spread of disease. Manufacturer’s warranty could have the potential of being invalid related to using cleansing isopropanol wipes (Courville, 2017). Other challengers could be battery life, and easy to misplace.

“Never before in history has innovation offered promise of so much to so many in so short a time.” – Bill Gates (as cited in Frazer, 2007)
Technological innovations are dramatically changing how the health care industry operates. One example of this change is the transformation of gaming systems and virtual worlds into effective health care devices. Today’s gaming systems are capable of strengthening motor skills during rehabilitation, while virtual worlds promote a form of nonjudgmental communication and self-confidence for those patients who suffer from physical and mental limitations. Innovations such as these have been well received as they promote health in a positive and entertaining way.
In this week’s Discussion, you appraise how these innovations can enhance health care practices. Focus on analyzing innovations with which you may be unfamiliar. For example, you may choose to look at the fields of decision support, robotics, telehealth, and nanotechnologies.

NURS 8210 Week 7: Nursing and Health Care Informatics Tools: Telehealth, Robotics, and Decision Support Systems
Health information technology includes a wide range of systems that electronically capture and disseminate information related to patient care. These clinical systems can lead to a higher quality of care and support evidence-based practice. Prominent clinical systems include computerized provider order entry (CPOE), electronic prescribing (e-prescribing), and picture archiving and communication systems (PACS). Certain clinical systems also provide decision support to providers, serving as adjuncts to human decision making rather than supplanting it. One challenge in designing these systems is to incorporate the support tools unobtrusively into the providers’ clinical work flow.
Other clinical applications are found in the field of telehealth, or telemedicine. These permit providers and organizations to deliver care and services to patients in other geographic locations.
