Assessment 1 – Assignment Weighting 40% Learning Outcomes  Critically discuss evidence and models relating to the role and impact of early life on health and wellbeing among different cultural groups.  Appraise the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to maternal, child and youth health service delivery in cross cultural community settings.  Interpret processes for building community constituencies and collaborations directed to advancing maternal, child and youth health within local and international primary health care settings. Format There are two parts to this assignment.  Part 1 requires you to complete and share a Research Matrix.  Part 2 requires you to write a brief Research Essay. Research Matrix (10%)  Download and use the Research Matrix, available via Blackboard > Assessment 1: Assignment folder.  Undertake a peer‐review discussion of the research matrix provided by two other students. Research Essay (30%)  Length: 1500 words (plus or minus 10%)  Word (or similar) digital document.  Your document should be formatted with 1.5 line spacing.  You should include the ECU Cover Sheet at the start of your submission. Due Dates   Research Matrix ‐ Week 7, Monday 4 April 2016   Research Essay ‐ Week 9, Monday 25 April 2016 Topic Choose a health issue for a defined group of people and undertake a review of the current literature relevant to a defined health issue that affects the group. You need to choose one group of people from the following list:  Mothers  Youth aged 13 to 18 years  Children from birth to 13 years You need to choose one health issue that affects your group, such as:  Mental Health  Oral Health  Obesity  Drug and alcohol misuse Instructions Complete the Research Matrix Begin by downloading the Research Matrix, available via Blackboard > Assessment 1: Assignment folder. 1. Conduct a search of the literature on the influences of the individual, the family, the local community and community services on the health issue for your chosen group within an Australian context.   2. Choose ten sources of evidence on this subject that are credible, current (post 2010) and relevant. 3. Enter your sources into the Research Matrix, addressing the requirements across all columns. This matrix is designed to help you identify the main themes or findings for the health issue and evaluate the quality of the article by forming opinions regarding the context of the articles. 4. At the start of Week 7, you need to upload your completed Research Matrix to Blackboard > Discussion Board > Assessment 1 Research Matrix forum. 5. During Weeks 7 and 8 you need to login to Blackboard > Discussion Board > Assessment 1 Research Matrix forum and review the Research of other students. Discuss the quality of the articles, as well as the evidence and credibility of the information. You should respond to at least 2 people, sharing ideas in a supportive way. To ensure that everyone receives feedback, discussions will be on a first‐in basis. If there are already 2 people providing feedback on a Research Matrix, you will need to choose another. 6. Use this discussion opportunity to assess the quality of the literature you have chosen and to assist you with formulating ideas and evidence to support your research. The more you engage with one another, the better your essay will become.   7. To keep the conversations moving, you need to login and respond on a regular basis across the two‐weeks. Regular responses are those made within 48 hours of the original post being uploaded. Complete the Research Essay Referring to your Research matrix and incorporating feedback from your peers, write your assignment using the following headings: 1. Introduction – Provide a brief overview of the chosen topic. Define your group and explain the chosen topic. Explain the current situation regarding this topic; for example what percentage of Australian individuals or families experience this health issue, what levels of mortality or morbidity are associated with this health issue? 2. Body – Compare and contrast the main themes influencing the chosen topic. Discuss the main themes identified from the research by comparing and contrasting the evidence from the ten articles. Identify the main themes of importance. Discuss differences and similarities in findings between sources. 3. Conclusion and Recommendations.           Summarise the main findings on the health issue for your chosen group and any research gaps you have identified or recommendations that you have found. 4. Submit your Research Essay.
