The Creative Spirit – Theatre 0807Museum Paper GuidelinesFind a piece of art to which you have a strong reaction/connection, research it’s creation, and then write a paper stating why you think the piece is effective, using both your research and your own personal experience as support. Here is a recommended process to write the paper:Being in the presence of a work of art is a different experience than seeing a picture of it. Like a place of worship, or a well-designed stadium, seeing works of visual art presented in a museum heightens your experience by framing and contextualizing a piece in a compelling way. Go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art and select a work of art you have a strong response to.Spend some QUALITY time with it; observe your emotional response; open your imagination; look at it closely and specifically, as well as from a distance and casually; take notes; write honestly and freely about your feelings, your personal interaction – what do you see? What do you feel in the presence of this work of art? How does this piece move you?Note the context in which the work is being presented: How is it physically displayed? How do they light it? What are the surroundings like? What other works of art surround it? Are they all of a similar style? A similar time period? From the same place? The same artist? Is there other background information about the piece? Why do you think it is displayed this way? Make notes in your journal about what you learned about the piece, and questions you have about it. What are you curious about? What do you want to know more about? Make sure you have the name of the piece, the artist, and the date of its creation.Research how and why this piece of art was created.Who made this piece? When was it created? Why did the artist make this work of art? What is the background of the artist? What was going in the world at the time? In the artist’s country? In the artist’s life? What political, cultural, economic, social factors were present? What was going on the world of art at the time? Who was the field, or the gatekeepers of the domain? Who was the intended audience of this piece of art? What did the artist do that was novel? Did they move their domain forward? What was the reaction to the work of art at the time? How has the perception of the piece changed over time? Why is it significant enough to be in a leading museum?Research biographies of the artist, critical responses to the piece of art over time, historical accounts of the place and time the work was created, and other resources you find relevant. Now, compare your research about the creation of this piece with your reaction to it.Are you the intended audience of this piece?Do you think you were affected by this piece in ways the artist intended? Were you affected in ways the artist probably did not intend? How was this piece effective in eliciting a powerful response from you?USE SPECIFIC TERMS. Define the words that scholars have used to define this piece. Also describe the piece in your own specifically defined terms. Is this piece part of a movement? What techniques does the artist use? Present your findings.Write a 750-1500 word paper with a thesis on why this piece of art is effective. Support your thesis with your research and with your personal experience. **Note that all the questions above are just to inspire research, not to necessarily be included in the paper.ReferencesPlease use MLA style when writing this paper.
