Case Study One
Chern Wei finished secondary school last year and has just commenced an Arts course. He has no idea what kind of job this will lead to, but feels that university is his only option if he is going to get a good job in the future. Chern has always struggled to commit to his studies, but in the past he was able to get his work completed at the last minute. However, he is beginning to doubt this approach is going to work at university. He missed the deadline for his first assignment, and now has a fair bit of work to catch up on for all of his courses. Chern is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain his motivation to attend classes and do the required reading and assignments. As he is the first in his family to attend university, Chern doesn’t feel comfortable talking to his parents about how he is doing, and he is beginning to feel that perhaps university is not the right place for him at this time.
Case Study Two
Emily was very excited to begin a Business program and knows what she wants to do after graduation. Her brothers and sisters went to university and did very well and her family expect Emily to also do well in her studies. However, Emily is worried she might not do as well as they expect and has begun to stress about her ability to achieve the kinds of grades that will satisfy them. She attends all of her classes but does not feel she has a good understanding of the material presented in lectures or the relevance of the readings to her courses. She is not sure how to participate in tutorials so while she attends, she does not say anything in class. In order to try and do well and cope with the workload she has begun to focus on private study, stopping many of her non-university activities like watching her favourite television shows, seeing friends and gaming online. Some of her friends have told her she is becoming too focused on university but Emily is beginning to worry and feel very anxious about upcoming assignments that need to be completed.
Case Study Three
Melinda has started university after working for many years and it is not living up to her expectations. There are a lot of reading and assignments, which feel more like schoolwork than preparing for a career. Most of the other students seem very young and she has no interest in what they talk about during classes. Melinda has two children in primary school and a husband who works full-time. She is finding it very difficult to fit in full-time study and do all the necessary reading and preparation for classes; she has three assignments due soon. Melinda is beginning to wonder if she is just not smart enough and is too old to go to university.
