Leadership Experience Study

Leadership Experience Study

Are you curious about what it is like to be a public safety leader? It is very difficult to study leadership unless you can do so from the inside. Even if you are not yet a public safety leader at the higher levels, it is possible to study from the inside. This assignment asks you to develop a research design to penetrate the subjective meanings and experience of public safety leadership. You will develop a research project based on intensive interviews of a select group of public safety leaders. However, you will not implement your design. Assignment Instructions Complete the following: • Choose an empirically researchable topic for your study that would be acceptable to university reviewers. Refer to the Scientific Merit Review Process and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) iGuide pages, both of which are linked in the Resources. Also, you will be asked to consider the ethics of leadership research very carefully. Refer to the Research Ethics Education page on iGuide (linked in the Resources) for more information. • Consider different aspects you might be able to study on the inner life of public safety leaders in practical and ethical terms using intensive interviews. What would you want to learn? What are you most curious about? How could you construct a study that might have useful benefits? This is a great exercise to become dissertation-ready, although here we are merely conceptualizing the design. • Select and read one qualitative interview-based research article from a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal that is relevant to your topic and has the same basic format you would like to use for your study design. Use the Capella library to find the article. You will use this article as a basis for designing your own qualitative research project that applies a theory pertaining to public safety leadership. Organization of the Assignment Organize your assignment into the following sections: Title Page Start your research design project with a simple title that very briefly characterizes your proposed project. (Your title should not be more than 10 words. Do not put quotation marks around or underline the title.) An abstract is not needed. Introduction • In APA, the introduction does not require a subheading because it is known to come first. • Begin the assignment with an introduction of the general topic that you will be studying. For example, you may wish to study the challenges leaders face in striving to link the public safety agency with the communities served. • State the theoretical and practical significance of your topic. Why is it important or useful to study this topic? • Indicate what you want to find out about the topic by offering your research question. • As you make your selection, include a leadership theory that will help you to define and test hypotheses. • Specify the potential contribution this project could make to the literature by briefly indicating the gap in knowledge that it will fill. • This section should be approximately 300 words. Literature Review • Briefly summarize the article you located earlier, focusing carefully on how the article uses theory in relation to the research project. • Show how the article with its theory and findings lead you to develop your research design. • This section should be approximately 500 words. Method of Research • Design your own study. • State the central research question in one sentence. What do you want to discover? • Provide a guiding thesis statement. • Describe the method of research you would use to carry out your intensive interview approach. Be as precise and detailed as possible within the scope of this assignment. • Present the types of questions you would ask. • Describe the sample you would access and how you would access this sample and collect the data. • Present the measures you would use to analyze your qualitative interview data. • Show how you would protect the security and confidentiality of your sample by taking into account the elements of research ethics. Refer to the Research Ethics Education page on iGuide (linked in the Resources). • This section should be approximately 500 words. Anticipated Findings • Suggest what you imagine you would find if you actually implemented the design. • How would you analyze the data using qualitative tools? • How would you present the data? • This section should be approximately 200 words. Discussion • Describe how you would use theory to explain the findings you would expect to obtain. • Describe what your research would demonstrate about the distinctive nature and features of public safety leadership as expressed by the leaders. • Discuss how leaders evaluate their own leadership challenges. • Identify at least one limitation of your own proposed project. • Present ideas for improving the leadership function that could be taken from your proposed research project. • Suggest a follow-up study to promote further beneficial research activity. • This section should be approximately 500 words. Be sure that your assignment includes reference to one peer-reviewed research article and that the citations and reference comply with APA guidelines. The total length of your assignment should be around 2000 words, excluding title page and reference page.
