ENGLISH 102 – RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT – E. HEARST
DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON THE DATE STIPULATED ON THE COURSE
SCHEDULE – ABSOLUTELY NO EMAIL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED
DO NOT EVEN ASK!
In order to successfully complete English 102, you are required to compose a 5 – 7 page research
paper with your primary text(s) being one or more of the novels, short stories, or poems that we
have read during the semester. As stated on the syllabus, this final project is heavily weighted
and represents a large portion of your final grade for this course. Your paper must explore one or
more of the main themes present in your primary text, many of which we have discussed in class.
It is highly recommended that you approach your subject while reading through a critical lens or
by using a keyword. For example, a Freudian or psychoanalytical reading would yield an
exploration of the psychological issues facing one or more of the characters in the text. Reading
through the lens of feminism would allow you to produce a paper that deals with issues
concerning women. A Marxist reading would enable you to write about economic issues and/or
the topics of oppression and resistance, etc. If you are confused about any of this, you should
speak to me before you get too far along in your project. Remember that your thesis and your
paper should be centered on your primary text. Do not go off on tangents or overgeneralize. Be a
disciplined writer and maintain your focus on the primary text(s).
You must conduct research and incorporate a minimum of five secondary sources into your
paper. To find these, use the subscription databases that are available to you through the
LaGuardia Library Media Resources Center portal. Additional secondary sources may include
other critical or biographical texts, works of literary criticism, articles in periodicals such as
newspapers and magazines, and/or information obtained from reliable websites. Websites with a
.com suffix are not acceptable—use .edu, .org, or .gov websites only. You must use quotes
from your primary and secondary sources as evidence to support your claims. Be sure to
use proper MLA format throughout your paper. Points will be deducted if your paper is not in
compliance with current MLA style. Updated MLA guides are available on the LaGuardia
Library web page, as well as at the Purdue OWL website. In-text citations and a Works Cited
page are required. Please note that although you must number the Works Cited page, it does not
count toward your 5 – 7 page total requirement.
Revise, revise some more, and then revise again … and proofread! Do NOT plagiarize! If you
have any questions I am available for conferences during my office hour, after class ends, or via
telephone and email. In addition, your drafts will be undergoing peer review and I will be
conducting individual conferences with you during class before you pass in your final revision.
Tutors at The Writing Center can also offer you valuable assistance.
You will have every opportunity to polish your work and submit a well-written, thoroughly
researched, and persuasively argued final essay. If you approach this task with a positive attitude
I am confident that it will be a rewarding learning experience for you. I look forward to reading
your papers.
