Individual written assignment. Each student will choose one of the following topics.
a. What is the role of agglomeration economies in the location of Foreign Direct Investment in China?
b. How might environmental problems affect economic development in China?
Some of the assigned reading bears on these topics, but additional research is required. At least two academic sources must also be used—they should contribute substantially to your argument (although you do not necessarily have to completely agree with them). “Academic sources” does not mean book reviews or Wikipedia; it means professional journals with peer-reviewed articles or scholarly books published by university presses, or the equivalent. How to find academic sources that pertain to your topic? One way is to use a search engine, such as the library’s or Google Scholar. You can also start with the references listed in the assigned readings on the topics. All sources, including readings from the course, must be cited in the paper. For more on citations, see “Concerning Writing,” below.
Examples of acceptable journals available in or through the library: Asian Economic Journal; China Review International; Economies of Transition; Eurasian Geography and Economics; Journal of Contemporary Asia; Journal of Economic Geography; Nature; Papers in Regional Science; Science. There are many more acceptable journals.
