Purpose of Assessment: Given selected readings, the candidate will reflect on the role of teacher as leader. The candidate will discuss formal and informal leadership roles of teachers in establishing equitable and just classrooms and schools.
Instructions: Given 2-3 appropriate journal articles on teacher as leader, you will analyze, reflect upon, and react to these readings. Your professor will provide you with some of the articles necessary for this assignment. You will research in scholarly databases and find at least one additional article on teacher leadership.
Then, based on the multiple articles you’ve read, select one as the primary source for this paper. Address the questions below in an APA-style paper that synthesizes your responses to the following questions:
Part I:
1. How do you define teacher as leader?
2. How does the author of the article define or describe the teacher as leader? How does this relate to your definition? To definitions provided in other texts?
3. In what way do you find the authors’ ideas about teacher leadership meaningful and significant in terms of your own experiences? With what issues, examples, or themes do you agree or disagree? Explain why.
4. In what ways does this author connect formal or informal teacher leadership to establishing equitable and just classrooms? Do you agree or disagree with the author’s stance? Why?
Part II
5. What connections do you see between this article and teachers in your past who are/were leaders? Be specific. Give examples. Draw on your Field Experience I course and your time as a K-12 student. If you have not had experiences with people you would consider to be teacher leaders, explain why you believe you have not encountered teacher leaders.
Part III
6. What implications do the premises discussed in the text (the article you read) have for your teaching? Give at least 2 examples of how you can become a leader in your future classroom / school.
Your paper should be no less than 3 pages long. It is expected that you use proper English writing mechanics including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
If you include a quotation in your paper, be sure to cite the source according to APA format and include the reference(s) at the end of your paper.
