Impacts of deviation on the rights and duties of a carrier under contracts of carriage

You are asked by a Protection & Indemnity Association (i.e. a P&I Club) to explain why, historically, deviation has had a major impact on the rights and duties which a carrier has under contracts of carriage and to give reasons why in your opinion these traditional rules should or should not continue to be applied.
