Corey, 2014 describes different programs that participants of the group partake in and those programs are the evolution of a group and challenges facing group leaders, Corey et al. (2014) also describes the different techniques that one can follow to have an effective group/be an effective group leader. After reading and viewing the video I feel that I would love to lead a group of women or even men who suffer from substance abuse. I say this because I have personally experienced a family member who suffers from substance abuse and he currently lost his son (who is now living with my sister) due to this problem. (Forsyth, 2014) indicates that groups influence the way that members feel, think, and act” (pg.242). People can be influenced into doing what is right, and what is wrong fairly easy and have the “power” to influence others even when they are trying to resist which is how Forsyth, (2014), defines social power. As a group leader my goal would be to actively listen to the problems that the women or men are suffering from as Corey (2014) mentions as well as reflect, clarifying, questioning, empathizing and more. To be an effective group leader you have to listen to get a better understanding to what the people in your group are struggling with, as well as be empathetic. I believe that being empathetic is the most effective because in many cases you cannot fully understand what a person has went through because you have not witnessed it yourself but you can empathize with them show them that you are trying to understand and relate the best way that you can, that to me indicates that I care. And clarifying, trying to help your client express their feelings as clearly as possible (Corey, 2014). Something that I also found to be important as a group leader is that (Jacobs, 2016) indicates is Linking. By linking you as the group leader would be trying to connect people, trying to listen and see what it is that they may have in common with one another, I feel that this is also effective because it is allowing others to know that they are not alone and are not the only ones who have experienced this horrific life changing problem/issue. There were so many effective group leader techniques that I feel that I could and would most definetly implement in my group but those are just a few that stood out to me.
