To better serve multicultural individuals, counselors must be cognizant of the social inequities, power differences, and dynamics that impact racial and ethnic groups and their multicultural identities. Multicultural counseling competencies and skills are highlighted, with special emphasis placed in the counselor’s self-awareness, worldview, and racial identity. The practice of MCT include working with the client, families, group setting, clinical setting, and educational environments. MCT empower clients linking them with community resources while providing guidance and support. According to the authors (2014), the future direction in MCT practice are to first increase attention to clients’ perceptions of counselors’ multicultural competence and related benefits for treatment process and outcome. Secondly, expanding counselors’ role to include more attention to context and social injustice in clients’ live. Finally, for the future practice of multicultural competence the individual, the counseling should be universal or specifically applied to particular clients. The future of research in MCT include developing research based on cultural. The future research might examine modalities for promoting cultural diversity. The future of multicultural counseling theory, practice and research would be based on whether it is appropriate and if it can expand on current trends (Hays & Erford, 2014, p. 538). Hay et al. (2014), suggest this can be done by rethinking the concept of multicultural competence include focusing on social advocacy and intersecting identities, refining traditional counseling theories with nontraditional, and assessing how common factors may be universal across cultural diversities. The future directions in multicultural counseling theory, counselor practitioner and researchers are encouraged to critically examine and refine traditional counseling theories (Hays & Erford, 2014).
I agree with the authors suggesting on the future of multicultural counseling in theory, practice and research. The growing population of varied individuals in the United States will put more pressure on counselors to be culturally competent in their service delivery. Multicultural counseling competence must continue to evolved and be relevant. Furthermore, so that counselors can continue to be effective, cultural competence is imperative. The continued growth in the number of individuals and families from diverse upbringings challenges counselors therefore more study is a necessity in order to meet the needs of a growing and diverse society. Counselors’ awareness of own culture will benefit our clients and assistance them with the progression of gaining awareness of cultures that are different from their own.
