G., & Erford, B. T. (2014). Developing multicultural counseling competence: A systems approach (2nd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson. ISBN: 9780132851022. Thanks (Brandi) The article I chose was “Spirituality in Counseling: A Faith Development Perspective”. In this article it discussed the faith development theory by James Fowler and how its stage model of spiritual and religious development allows counselors to identify both adaptive qualities and potential burdens regarding spirituality and religion (Parker, 2011). This article also mentions that spirituality and religion in a counseling setting is useful to the client if they use Fowlers method because the client’s faith structures without having to endorse or challenge specific religious beliefs (Parker, 2011). This article helps counselors understand the developmental model of the Faith Development Theory and how to incorporate it in their counseling sessions. It also helps them become competent in working with spiritual and religious issues. According to the code of ethics by the American Counseling Association (ACA, 2014), it mentions that counselors should have some multi-cultural competencies in order for them to better understand their client. The code of ethics by the ACA says for a counselor to not impose their religion on their clients and do not discriminate against other religions. However, it doesn’t really mention too much about spirituality in the counseling sessions. The American Association Christian Counselors (AACC), (2014) mentions that its ok for the counselor to share their beliefs and values only if, their using it for self-disclosure or if it’s appropriate to the client’s needs (AACC, 2014). In a counseling session, I don’t want to impose my beliefs and values on others but I will educate them and let them know their spiritual development is important to their healing. But the first thing I would do in a session is get an informed consent pertaining to spirituality and religion so the client is comfortable with discussing such topics with me. I will let my clients know that if at any point they don’t feel comfortable after the consent to discuss spirituality and religion they can tell me to stop. Also in my counseling sessions, I will incorporate the Faith Development Perspective so I can get a better understanding of the client’s religious beliefs and values. As a future counselor, I want to be able to incorporate methods to use spirituality and religion in my sessions so the client can heal through the power of God. Some clients, seek to get spiritual counseling as a healing method so if I get their permission to incoporate it than I will be able to fulfil their needs in our counseling sessions.
