In the movie Fireproof, to me it showed a lot of emotion as well as confusion, the movie was about a couple who were struggling to understand each other and did not communicate to one another that well. Both Caleb and Catherine had a hard time trying to communicate with other which then prompted poor communication skills. According to Peterson, (2007) Frustration and isolation may be a god enough reason to sort out better intimacy-producing skills. There things that are going on around us and the meaning of one’s behavior are often ambiguous, and open to many different interpretation (Stewart, 2012 p.213). Many different interpersonal concepts that I saw being displayed in the movie were humor, relationship deterioration and them trying to repair things. Both characters were hearing one another but they weren’t actively listening to their partner, which turned into a huge communication barrier between them. Self-disclosure also played a role in how Catherine and Caleb communicated to one another, their actions that were displayed in the beginning slowly changed and begin to cause problems in their marriage.
As we went further into the movie I noticed how their communication skills towards one another gradually improved and they overcame the communication barriers that stood in their way, they listen to one another, and work on ways to mend the damage that was happening. In the movie, self-disclosure appeared to also help reveal secrets that the characters had which than led to them changing their behavior and any disagreements. Identity was displayed when the couples disagreed later decided to evaluate the positive and the negatives that they possessed in order to build and repair their relationship. To me it appeared that Caleb displayed having the most problems with interpersonal communication, because he eventually went to a friend to receive support and help which is where Caleb committed his life to Christ, which is where Caleb’s identity was “found.” According to Burley-Allen, (1995) Change can happen quickly or slowly at a snail’s pace. Often people tent to resists change because they are not certain as to what their results may be.
