Fireproof was a movie that captured how communication can be hurtful and deception used by two people. In the movie Fireproof, there was many concepts that was covered when it comes to interpersonal communication. Katherine and Caleb was a couple who have been arguing with each other because of deception and using hurtful messages. Deception is define as lying to someone and this is a potential consequence for someone in a relationship (Stewart, 2012, p. 329). Katherine been noticing that Caleb have an addiction to pornography, and this been putting a strain on their relationship. Katherine and Caleb argument lead into them saying hurtful messages to each other. Hurtful messages are one of the ways that people attempt to assert to power (Stewart, 2012, p.329). Throughout the movie their marriage was hard to repair because of the hurtful message and the deception that went on in their marriage.
The deception and hurtful messages among them was so bad that Katherine wanted to file a divorce. Caleb used self-disclosure with his father because he opened up about his marriage that was in trouble. Secondly, Caleb told his father that he did not want to get a divorce from Katherine. Therefore, since Caleb used self-disclosure his father helped and prayed for them. When I was watching Fireproof, I’ve noticed that self-disclosure have many benefits. Self-disclosure improves the quality of relationship (Stewart, 2012, p.213). In the beginning of the movie Caleb did not have a relationship with the Lord. Caleb father and his friend introduce him to Salvation. Once Caleb relationship with the Lord was healthy he gave up pornography, and helped take care of Katherine’s mom. Katherine’s mom had a stroke a year ago, and she could not talk. Caleb used self-disclosure with Katherine as well because he shared the reactions about how he was feeling towards their marriage. Identity was revealed because Caleb changed because of an event that was going to change his marriage.
