Helen Keller Autobiography
Helen Keller Autobiography
Evaluating literature is an important skill. It involves much more than saying “this is good!” or “I don’t like this book.” There are three steps to evaluating a text. First, figure out the author’s purpose. Second, determine whether or not he achieved that purpose. Third, support your determination with examples. For this project, you’ll complete a literary response to Chapter IV of Helen Keller’s The Story of My Life.
OBJECTIVES
Evaluate an autobiography.
Write a composition of at least 250 words.
Instructions:
You know that an autobiography’s purpose is two-fold:
First: The author shows the reader what happened to her and how it shaped her outlook on life.
Second: The author convinces the reader that her outlook is worth knowing about.
You have identified Helen Keller’s purpose; now you must decide whether you think she achieved it and support your decision with examples. To do this you will:
Write a composition of at least 250 words.
Explain why or why not Chapter IV of Helen Keller’s The Story of My Life helps to achieve the two-part purpose of an autobiography.
Give at least two examples of why the chapter does or does not achieve the purpose. Remember to document your examples properly in MLA format (or the format assigned by your teacher).
