GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA
GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA
Sadly, we live in a country were firearm violence is all too common. Many of us are familiar with the tragic loss of life at Columbine, Sandy Hook, and other scenes of mass murder.
With firearm violence in America as the effect, consider one or more causes that may have contributed to the many instances of this type of crime, and then make an argument supported by facts that there are one or more causes for this increase in firearm violence. You may use the information about this topic that your group found, but you are also encouraged to find information on your own (see Research Requirements on p. 2 of this assignment.
Important: Although you may provide some background information on the topic, this is NOT a report; you will make an argument.
Responding Successfully:
I: Length Requirements
Length – you must write between 1000 and 1500 words. Your references page will appear on a separate page following the final page of the draft; the references do NOT count as part of the length requirement.
II: Research Requirements
In order to support your argument, you must cite at least 3, and no more than 6 periodicals (newspapers, magazines, journals); one of these MUST be a peer-reviewed (scholarly journal) article. Please review notes from class about peer-reviewed journals.
You MUST include the required number/type of sources, in-text citations and a references page for each draft of this paper; failure to meet ALL of these requirements will result in a zero for the draft.
III: Cause & Effect Defined
1. A cause is an event, series of events, or set of circumstances resulting in an outcome, or series of outcomes (effect or effects).
2. An effect is an outcome resulting from a cause, or series of causes.
3. You must develop an argument of some kind; do NOT write a paper where you merely list causes. Remember that in the academic sense, to argue is to persuade; therefore, in order to make an argument, you must examine specific causes, and then use the research information from the periodicals that you found on your own and with your group to determine how one or more events contributed to increased firearm violence (the effect) in America.
4. Your discussion must include examples, and selected quotes from the periodicals that you read for this topic. Research on this topic is mandatory.
5. Your paper MUST include both in-text citations AND a references page.
You must cite all sources that you use in writing this paper. This includes direct quotes, paraphrases, summaries, and all ideas that can be attributed to an outside source.
No more than 15% of your paper may come from quoted material. Ex. A 1000-word paper must not contain more than 150 words from outside sources.
While quotes can be a wonderful way to support your ideas, they must not dominate the paper. In other words, the paper must be your own work. You are making an argument, and using ideas from journal articles to support your position.
