DETAILS OF SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
(1) Defining giftedness essay (1200 words, 29% – due 9th April)
Purpose:
Diverse definitions of giftedness abound. In order to understand the research, to debate the issues and to be effective in identifying and providing for gifted students in schools, teachers need to develop a clear understanding of the concept of giftedness. Schools need to develop and articulate shared understanding of giftedness and adopt a school-wide definition that is appropriate for their context. This assignment will help students to explore (in detail and at depth) one definition of giftedness and consider both the beliefs that inform the definition and the implications that flow from the definition.
Task:
Critically evaluate one definition of giftedness from the literature and explain how it is appropriate to a defined context.
Your paper will:
• determine the ideas and beliefs that underpin the definition and grounds it in a particular philosophical or theoretical framework
• evaluate the definition using 3 of Moon’s (2006, in Purcell & Eckert, 2006, p. 26) guiding principles of:
o soundness
o equity
o utility
reflect on the feasibility of this definition for your particular educational context, or for a specified group of students (make sure that you clarify your ‘defined context’ in your introduction. For instance you could be talking about a school in another country( Alam al-tofola private school in Jeddah) is an example Alam al-tofola private school is an example of such schools and was founded in 1992. The school, which is a girls’ secondary school mainly teaches Arabic and English. The school comprises of a two-storey building and has 600 students in total and 40 professors and members of staff.

Tannenbaum is one of the key scholars in the field. This longer chapter from an excellent resource book provides a very comprehensive overview of the issue & is available as an e-reading. Another resource for this assignment is the book that was previously used as the textbook for this topic, so is available in the library. Chapter 2 is an e-reading. Sternberg, R.; Jarvin, L. & Grigorenko, E. (2011). Explorations in giftedness. New York, NY: Cambridge University Press. Chapter 1 describes Sternberg’s Pentagonal theory of giftedness.
Whichever definition you select, I would expect that you read that author’s original work to best understand their conception of giftedness, so search for articles/books by that author to read.

People believe that there are several factors that cause in presence giftedness are religion, customs and traditions of heredity, surroundings of the child . (Callahan & Hertberg-Davis, 2013).
There are several studies that help detect talented through identifying their characteristics since kindergarten. this strong reason for refute the myth which says all children are gifted. Mahmoud, E. ( October 1997) If all children are talented, why there was a need to recognize and build their own schools.
In addition to the tests, which measure IQ are all indications of differences in mental abilities between individual. Munro, J. (2013) And also there are differences stimulation in neural pathways to the brain when the gifted, compared with non-gifted.
There was much debate about the role of genetic factors and environmental factors in the area of talent, had to stop some middle ground stresses the importance of the role of each, without genetic talent working for equal opportunity for everyone to be an effective development of training programmes and develop the talents of individuals, Some believe that a genetic factor talent she inherited abilities when humans grow and evolve with the influence of external factors, and these factors are the so-called environment that embraces talent and pave the way towards innovation and excellence in all areas of life.
