This time let us work togther to do the poster. you can just continue on the writing part and breifly pasting some pictures related with the project(check the example poster i posted). The rest of the stuffs such as formatting i will finish them. thank you!
Geoscape Project — Helpful Hints
In years past, students have asked for general advice on where to find resources. This page provides additional information in the following categories:
- General – Getting Ideas/Your outline
- Finding Sources
- Annotated Bibliography
- Programs for making posters
General – getting ideas/your outline:
The Geoscape Poster Series was developed by geoscientists working in the Geological Survey of Canada, who were looking forw a way to be able to translate complex information about the geology of an area to a public audience – particularly teachers. If you have general questions about what to include in yours, I’d recommend that you take a look at other Geoscape Posters.
I’ve provided links to Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa-Gatineau and Montreal below (end of page, and there is a link to these on the Geoscape Page).
When looking at these sites and the posters, please take careful note the structure, layout, writing style and content (including imagery). A couple of comments about this:
- Note that each of the posters have individual panels that relate to the specific context of the city (see image below)
- Each has an introductory section that provides a high level view of the geological setting and why that is important; the “panels” provide an opportunity to explore further.
- The subjects (topics covered) differ from city to city. The subjects will form the basis for your ” panels”,and your outline.
- Many use a central image as a theme, and each panel has one or more images to explain concepts. You might also use video clips depending on your approach (for example, if you are using PPT or a website).
- All have links to references and where to find more information.
- Some of the posters are “wordier” than others.
What should be included in the project?
The project should describe and explain the geology of your selected city. Each project can be quite different, because the characteristics of the geology impact each region differently. There are some common elements however. You should ask questions like:
- What is the current tectonic setting?
- What rocks are present?
- How did the area evolve to its current state?
- What issues or hazards impact the region?
- What resources are important to the region?
You should consider developing 6-8 thematic panels (slides) plus and overview slide that synthesizes the impact of geology on the city. Each panel should have some media element (photo, video clip, diagram, etc.) and approximately 250 words of explanatory text. In addition to the geological content specific to the area, you will want to make sure that you help others understand the terminology so a short glossary will be helpful (consider using small pictures to explain the terms). You must also be sure that you use reliable sources and document them in a scientific way. All sources should be cited and documented – much like you see in the Geoscape poster series. The following are suggested panels:
- Tectonic Setting
- Geological Map
- Stratigraphic Section/Timeline
- Issues & Hazards (2-3)
- Water sources and challenges
- Energy sources and challenges
- Resources important to the city or region
- Geology in the News (highlight “big events”)
- Glossary
- Reference list – see note below.
