Gender and Sustainability
Gender and Sustainability
There are 3 prompts you can choose between. It doesn’t matter which you choose as long as it’s a guaranteed A. As I’m a freshman in college, please don’t make it too formal, but make it formal enough to guarantee an A. Please have it due by November 12th, at 11:59pm.
Choose one of the following prompts for your essay:
A. Compare and contrast environmentalists’ arguments (reference Garrett Hardin, Paul Ehrlich, and/or the IPAT or other models) with gender and development based approaches (like those adopted in particular nation, such as Rwanda) on population and environmental sustainability. Can either or both of these perspectives together be used to develop a holistic and internationally acceptable and applicable response to contemporary population pressures on the natural environment? How so?
B. Bill McKibben supports the argument that conservation is “the cheapest way to reduce carbon…but that’s just the start.” Yet, even though we know that men and women relate differently to energy use, he does not specifically address gender. What does it mean to incorporate gender into energy conservation projects, programs, and policies? Focus on one country or a single organized campaign. Draw on class readings and discussion and your own research to explain how gender matters to successful conservation.
C. During the 1970s and 80s, the “housewife activism” associated with “civic mothering” among elite women early in the industrial revolution was transformed into a radical movement centered on environmental justice. Why? Draw on feminist and social movement theory from your reading, lectures, and individual research to explain the role of housewife activists in a specific environmental case, such as toxics (Love Canal, Stringfellow Acid Pits) or mining/oil extraction (hydraulic fracturing).
Essays should be 1000-1500 words, double-spaced, in Times New Roman size 12, with one-inch margins. Due November 12th at 11:59pm.
