Assignment 3 – Definition
For this paper you must write a clear, well-organized paper that follows the examples and recommendations we discuss in class.
The aim of the paper is that you demonstrate that you can  write an introduction that attracts the reader’s attention and states a clear, specific thesis,  provide three body paragraphs that develop and support your thesis using evidence such as examples, illustrations, descriptions, or explanations, and  summarize your point of view in a convincing conclusion.
Steps 1. Select a topic. This can be from the list below, or can be one of your own. 2. Write an outline. The outline should state your thesis and list evidence. This needs to be submitted with the paper. 3. Write the paper. 4. Submit the paper to Angel. Go to Lessons>Assignments>Writing Assignment 3 – Definition Drop Box If you are not clear about this, you can bring it to class on your flash drive, and I will show you how it works.
Grading This assignment is worth 7% of your final grade. Points will be awarded on the basis of

About Definition Writing
Purpose:
Writers compose definitions for many reasons – to correctly define a misunderstood term, to deepen or re-direct its meaning, to plumb a term’s history, or to entertain readers.
Audience
People who read definition essays do so for different reasons, but all seek to learn something. For some readers, the term may be new, while for others, the term may be familiar but misunderstood.
Topic
For any definition, the topic is a term. Terms may be technical, unusual, complex, comical or new. They may have changed through time. They may be crucial to a larger analysis or argument.
Remember: a definition is not an argumentative or opinion-based paper. While you might select a controversial topic, the aim is to clarify what different people or groups might understand by the term. It is not to project your point of view.
