Food culture
Food culture
1. How do you think cultural or physical isolation – or the lack of isolation – affects changes in food traditions?
2. What is your local restaurant food landscape like? Why do you think it’s like that? Besides looking at your community, check the local yellow pages under restaurants. How diverse is your local restaurant landscape? Anything surprising?
3.Think about the fast food landscape. Where are fast food restaurants located? Why? Why do you think people eat fast food? Have you ever eaten at a food truck? – What did you eat?
4. Iconography is important in place identity as well as economics (advertising and marketing). Give some examples of iconography and the food landscape (such as the Maine lobster). What do you put together as a food or product being from some place and why? Are you more likely to look for these items or try them?
5. What did you think about eating local or slowing down as in slow food? Does urban agriculture and being more self-sustaining interest you? Would you pay more for foods that were raised in a sustainable fashion or learn to raise foods and use more locally produced foods?
