Semester 2, 2015
DDD10001 Introduction to Design Principles and Processes
Assessment 2: Tasks 7-12 plus written report Word limit: 3000 (+/- 10%) Weighting: 60%
Due date: 9am AEST Monday 9 November 2015
Assessment overview
This assessment task requires you to apply your knowledge and understanding of design to document a concept that links design with your work or studies. The project will include a brief documentation of the design process, visualisation of the design, and designed communication through a blog, a document and a presentation.
You should start by thinking about ways that you can use your design knowledge to share your understanding of the role and value of design with your peers. Then you will use design principles to produce material that will communicate and share this information with them.
Assessment details
This assessment has two components:
1. Weekly tasks.
2. Development of a blog, presentation and documentation.
Weekly tasks
Your work in all Assessment Tasks will be individual, but you will collaborate on ideas, share feedback, and discuss your analysis and development as part of the design process.
Each week there will be 2-4 questions posted in Weekly Tasks. You should post your responses in the designated section on Discussion Board. Your response to each question is expected to be approximately 100-200 words unless directed otherwise. If the task specifies an informal response, you are not expected to reference resources beyond your weekly learning materials; if you are asked to support your response with evidence, you are required to do additional research and reading, and cite those sources in your responses.
Please note: your responses will be assessed according to the quality and your demonstrated ability to engage with and respond to the questions within the discussion board.
The weekly tasks for Weeks 7-12 form part of this assessment. The themes of each task are below. Further details will be provided in classes and included in the Weekly Tasks section on Blackboard as each week progresses.

• Task 10.2: Peer feedback
Week 11

Week 12
• Task 12: Using design for impact
Blog, Presentation and Documentation Material
You are required to create a blog, and develop a presentation and documentation that communicates your understanding of design, and its role and value in 3000 words. You will create your own content and material using selected tools and choose appropriate images to accompany your written component. You can choose the format of your presentation and documentation according to what is most suitable for your area of research and your study discipline. For example, it can be in a form of a newsletter, business document, formal meeting materials or conference presentation, seminar or workshop materials or other documentation suited to your audience.
You will draw on your knowledge of design and design principles when choosing the format of your presentation and documentation, developing the content for assessment, and creating your presentation and submission.
Submission details
Please submit your assignment as a single document through via the Assessment tab on Blackboard. The submission link will be available in Week 12. Weekly tasks from your blog should be included as screen shots to make up the Appendix Blog that is part of your written report.
More detailed information will be provided on Blackboard in Weeks 9 and 11, and in weekly lectures and class discussion.
All submissions and materials must be properly referenced with in-text citations and a reference list using the Harvard referencing system.

Week 7
Please provide an individual response to the following questions. Use examples and support your response with three peer-reviewed resources plus a fourth resource of your own choosing.
What is creativity?
Are design and creativity connected? How?
Is creativity only relevant to design or media or advertising? Is creativity used in other types of businesses and organisations?
Week 8
1. Technology and the internet in particular has changed the way we communicate and be social: do you agree or disagree with this statement?
2. Social media had an impact on our communication – how is this connected to design? Please consider the effects of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – are they always positive and constructive?
Give at least three examples (including one peer-reviewed resource) to support your responses to each of these two questions.
Week 9
Task 9.1: The economics of design (specific to Assessment 3)
The Design Management Institute (DMI) refers to the value design brings but acknowledges the difficulty in defining and benchmarking it in standardised ways http://www.dmi.org/?DesignValue You may want to watch this too https://vimeo.com/73619059
How do you think the cost of design and the value it adds could be identified and measured in your area of study or the work you are doing for Assessment 3?
Task 9.2: Practical task (IP issues specific to Assessment 3)
What aspects of intellectual property will you consider and investigate in completing Assessment 3?
Task 9.3: Research on ‘cost’ of good and bad design (specific to Assessment 3)
Can you identify the ‘cost’ of design (good and/or bad design) in the research you have completed so far? Provide examples and explain how you might address this in Assessment 3.
Week 10 and 11
For Weeks 10 and 11 your online tasks and discussion are combined.
Using the following as a starting point, please use your knowledge of design and some additional research of your own to respond to the first Task. You can use your work for Assessment 3 as the basis for your response e.g. what are you planning on creating and why? what design principles are you drawing on? Why did you choose to create this?
3. Task 10.1: Using design to communicate (How to put together a clear and professional document using design principles)
Then you can complete Task 10.2 by posting a shorrt explanation of what you understand about peer feedback.
• Task 10.2: Peer feedback
After classes this week (Week 11) you should respond to the following explaining how you might use deisgn for personal expression in two other ways in your studies or work or even something you enjoy on your personal life.
Task 11: Using design for personal expression
Week 12
Propose three examples showing how design is used for impact – your three examples must include one from business or government and one in non-profit organisations.
Please explain what the impact is and how design enables it. You must provide at least one reference for each example.
