I personally think that the methods of traditional education are much easier than the methods of progressive education. Chapter 2 also shows the fact that the progressive education approach faces different issues that are difficult to tackle with. We can also find a difference in the opinion and viewpoints of people who favor prefer the progressive education approach. They believe that education takes place because of experience. This type of thinking is sometimes not correct. I anyhow believe that experience and education are two separate identities and they are not related to each other. It is true that a person learns from experience, but education also prepares the person for the coming experience which can make the experience better. It is very important to connect different experiences with each other in progressive education approach.

Progressive education approach is also difficult to tackle because if the experiences are not associated with each other properly then learning becomes disorganized and students start to lack in their approach to tackle with the situation. The larger the number of class, the more difficult it is to use this approach. Schools need to be equipped with proper tools and testing platforms if they want to use the progressive learning approach, but I personally feel that this type of approach is more difficult and complex than the traditional approach and it helps students to increase their learning by facing the experience because this approach is related to the experience. The progressive approach works well in many situations and I would also recommend such style of learning as it would test students’ capabilities and enhance their mental skills.

Dewey-Chapter 2

I agree that a progressive education presents different difficulties and challenges as compared to traditional education. As discussed in the chapter 2, progressive education is an approach, which expresses serious subject through an experiential process of learning. Progressive education is faced with different problems, which need to be solved. Amongst these challenges, the most significant reference is the connection, which exist between education and personal experience, or the philosophy, which is committed to some experiential and experiential philosophy.

The conviction that education is an outcome of experience, held by believers or progressive education is faulty; all experiences are not necessarily educative. Experience and education is not directly related, some experiences have negative impacts; however, this has been center of attacks from proponents of progressive education. Nevertheless, the connection between experience and education relies heavily on the quality of experience.

On the contrary, traditional education system involves a well-planned and purified set of significant experiences, which can be accepted in the learning process and applied to the current case. However, progressive education does not rely on established or institutional traditions, which constitute some philosophy. Instead progressive education has been characterized by an intensive revolt against the organization found with traditional education, including the philosophy of experience. It is based on some experimental learning, which works effectively in some situations, it may appear, plausible that any syllabus should use factor of both education systems. This has rendered the entire learning process under progressive education a complex process, which is often evaded by leaving out the traditional philosophies and theories.

With my experience in educational technology, which aims at improving education, I find it that progressive education, methods and relationships, is more difficult compared to traditional education. Progressive education, which was practiced mostly in the twentieth century, was centrally based on the child. It aimed at preparing children for future life, with its responsibilities. In progressive education, skills and information were things that were worked on in earlier years and the purpose of the schools were to transmit this information to the young. Basically, standards and rules were used in moral training by conforming to the stated standard and rules.

Traditional education sets adult rules and standards, methods and its subject-matter of the young as they grew towards maturity. Simply, what was taught in the traditional education was more of finished products. It did not regard the ways it came to be or future changes. Progressive education was a reaction against the traditional education, to escape the dogmatic nature that the latter presented. It was based on the idea of freedom and more with the present and the future as opposed to old education, which used knowledge gathered from past experience.

Contrasting traditional education, progressive imposed their view of better and practical education, which was child-centered. This made the young not willful to experience more as they were creatures of much curiosity and creativity. Believing that through experiences we are educated can be false as these experiences may not be as educating as we think. Though the progressive education is simpler, compared to the traditional one, its artificial way of arranging subject-matters and methods make it unnecessarily complex. With its vices, if the new education central ideas are brought forth cautiously, it may be successful.
