Exercise and Blood pressure

Length: Max 8 pages including reference list

Submission method options: EASTS (online)

Task

This task is designed so that you are able to demonstrate an understanding of the factors that affect blood pressure and cardiac output, in particular due to exercise.

To demonstrate this, you will need to answer a series of questions based on the data provided to you based on the practical you will undertake at residential school – Activity 4 Effect of Exercise on BP. The data table will be provided to you in the weeks where the cardiac topic is studied; i.e. week 3.  Residential school will allow you to clarify your understandings and ask questions before final submission of the assignment. However, it is expected that you will have prepared your answers before residential school.

See the laboratory manual for the details of Activity 4 Effect of Exercise on Blood Pressure. You should refer to the provided data table when answering the posed questions. Make sure you number any summary tables (and graphs if you use them) that you include in your answers and give them titles so that you can refer to them effectively.

For this task answer the following questions:

Q 1.  What do you expect to happen to systolic and diastolic blood pressure when we exercise? Why? (2 marks)

Q 2.  What were the average changes to the key measurements? What do these results indicate (don’t ignore the range of the results)? Do they support your response to question 1. If they do not, why might this be the case? (4 marks)

Q 3. Describe pulse pressure and Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP). How do these relate to cardiac output? (2 marks)

Q 4. How does the body regulate blood pressure? Include in your answer long term regulation. (10 marks)

Q 5. Discuss how the body manages blood pressure during exercise. Include in your answer discussion of why some people’s blood pressure changed more than others (with reference to the provided data). (10 marks)

Referencing technique – max 2 marks

Total marks possible – 30 marks

You must use the APA referencing style to reference your report.

Your textbooks and peer reviewed journal articles accessed through the Library journal databases are adequate resources. If you use sources other than textbooks and peer reviewed journal articles consider the quality of the resources you use for this task. Limit your sources to seven (7) references maximum. Commercial websites are not to be used. If in doubt, contact your subject co-ordinator.

Rationale

This assessment task is designed to assist students to demonstrate an understanding of the factors that mediate cardiac output and blood pressure. It specifically addresses the subject learning outcome: Demonstrate understanding of blood pressure and its control.

Marking criteria

More information will be made available to you in the laboratory session when you undertake the data collection for the assignment.

BMS192 Assignment 2 marking criteria.

Learning outcome: Demonstrate understanding of blood pressure and its control.

Overall score for the assessment out of 30 marks

Fail

less than 15 marks

No questions answered or information given does not answer the questions.

Pass

15 to 20.5 marks

All questions answered, but 3 of the 5 answers were inaccurate or incomplete. This demonstrates a fundamental understanding of cardiac physiology.

Credit

21-25 marks

All questions answered but 2 of the 5 answers were inaccurate or incomplete. Information given is sufficient to solve the problem. Answers given may be limited to only use of the text book.

Distinction

25.5- 28 marks

All questions answered but 1 of the 5 answers were inaccurate or incomplete. Answers demonstrate a good understanding of anatomy and physiology. Answers given show evidence of wider reading.

High distinction

28.5-30 marks

All questions answered correctly and completely. Answers demonstrate excellent understanding of anatomy and physiology. Answers given show evidence of wider reading.

References (2 marks)

0-2

Maximum marks will be awarded if the references in the text and in the reference list conform in all respects to the APA formatting conventions laid out in the American Psychological Association’s Publication Manual.

References in the text should consist of author(s) surnames (no initials) and date only; references in the reference list should be full references, in alphabetical order. References in text and reference list should match i.e. there should be no missing references.

You should incorporate at least one journal article into your assignment answers and reference list.

Marks will be deducted from the total possible mark for:

Poor grammar and spelling (10%);

Failure to follow instructions about assignment format (10%, see Presentation Section);

Use of direct quotes (10% deduction for each direct quote used);

Late submission penalty will be applied (5% per calendar day);

Any reports containing plagiarized material will not be marked. Assignments that contain plagiarized material will be submitted to the Dean of the Faculty of Science to be dealt with as Academic Misconduct.

Presentation

Your assignment must be typed and submitted using the standard font Times New Roman 12 point and 1.5-line spacing. Assignments that do not follow these guidelines will automatically lose 10% of the total possible grade.

Your assignment must be no longer than 7 pages, including the reference list. Work that exceeds these limits will not be marked.

Direct quotes are not appropriate.  You should present this information in your own words to demonstrate your understanding and writing skills. The use of direct quotes will be penalised, because copying information directly does not demonstrate that you understood the information. Please note that scientific and medical terminology that is in common use can be used without quotation marks. For example, hypertension is a commonly used medical term that you can use without quotation marks, even though that same term may appear in the original journal article you are paraphrasing.

Students must appropriately acknowledge their sources of information, including the text book, throughout their report using CSU APA referencing style.

Insert your name and student number into the document HEADER and the Page number in the document FOOTER.

File formats for submission to EASTS to facilitate electronic marking include: yourname.doc, yourname.docx or yourname.rtf   only.  Please do NOT use adobe pdf formats for your assignment.

EASTS  will automatically generate a cover sheet and so you will not need to create your own title page. Please ensure that you receive an email receipt when you submit via EASTS. If you do not receive a receipt your assignment has probably not been received and will be considered late and the normal penalties applied. If you are having trouble with EASTS please contact the subject coordinator immediately. DO NOT LEAVE your submission to the last minute as you risk incurring late penalties if you have trouble with EASTS.

Requirements

For this assignment, you will need to provide accurate answers to the questions outlined under the Task section in this document.

Assignment 2 tips

Do not use bullet points (like I have here!)

Do use APA referencing and in text citations (visit any journal to see examples)

Incorporate journal articles where appropriate

When including a table, refer to it in-text and include a detailed caption (see any journal for examples)

Marks will be deducted from the total possible mark for:

Poor grammar and spelling (10%)

Failure to follow instructions about assignment format (10%, see Presentation Section)

Use of direct quotes (10% deduction for each direct quote used)

Answer each question fully and accurately – especially those worth 10 marks!

Use the marks assigned to each question as a guide to how much detail is required.

Assessment 2 Data to be used will be sent to u as an exel doc
