Plan B: Using Nonparametric Models

Plan B: Using Nonparametric Models

Resources

  • .

In writing a research proposal, one might optimistically include the more powerful parametric models, such as multiple regression analysis or ANOVA. Since real research is rather messy, one should anticipate that the collected data may not satisfy the assumptions of those statistical models. Therefore, wise researchers include a Plan B—often the use of nonparametric models.

For this discussion, you will use the dataset from Pew Research Internet Project’s survey “May 2010 – Mobile Phones.” Assume you want to know whether there is an association between Internet use and e-mail. Of course, there is but this is for the sake of doing your first chi square.

Complete the following:

  • Use Q6a (Do you use the Internet at least occasionally?) and Q6b (Do you send or receive e-mail at least occasionally?) as your variables.
  • Examine your variables and take any necessary steps to satisfy the assumptions of chi square.
  • State the null and the alternative hypotheses.
  • Run the chi square with SPSS and provide statistical conclusions for the model you built.

Follow APA sixth edition statistical writing guidelines in your post.

Do not attach any SPSS output, as you are required to completely describe your work in the discussion area.

Collaborates with fellow learners, relating the discussion to relevant course concepts and extending the dialogue. Applies relevant professional, personal, or other real-world experiences. Does not contribute professional, personal, or other real-world experiences. Contributes professional, personal, or other real-world experiences, but lacks relevance. Applies relevant professional, personal, or other real-world experiences. Applies relevant professional, personal, or other real-world experiences to extend the dialogue. Supports position with applicable knowledge. Does not establish relevant position. Establishes relevant position. Supports position with applicable knowledge. Validates position with applicable knowledge. Participation Guidelines Actively participate in discussions. To do this you should create a substantive post for each of the discussion topics. Each post should demonstrate your achievement of the participation criteria. In addition, you should also respond to the posts of at least two of your fellow learners for each discussion question-unless the discussion instructions state otherwise. These responses to other learners should also be substantive posts that contribute to the conversation by asking questions, respectfully debating positions, and presenting supporting information relevant to the topic. Also, respond to any follow-up questions the instructor directs to you in the discussion area. To allow other learners time to respond, you are encouraged to post your initial responses in the discussion area by midweek. Comment to other learners’ posts are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. (Central time zone). DISCUSSION PARTICIPATION SCORING GUIDE PRINT
