Choose ONE of the writing prompts below write a 500-750 word documented essay.
Word count does not include the Works Cited page.
Remember this is an essay and should follow the guidelines for one. You need an
introductory paragraph that establishes the context of the essay and ends with a
strong thesis statement. You also need carefully developed body paragraphs that
use examples and quotes from the text and the secondary source(s), which support
the main idea that you have stated in your thesis. Finally, end with a conclusion that
ties everything together.
It is a requirement of this paper that you cite from the literature and sources in your
paper to support your ideas. The sources do not take the place of your explanations
or analysis, so you should not rely on too many quotes or paraphrases. Choose your
secondary source material judiciously.
Your paper needs to be written according to MLA format. This applies to heading,
margin and line spacing, in-text citation, and the Works Cited page. Please refamiliarize
yourself with MLA guidelines.
As you write, remember to maintain formal tone and style throughout the paper.
Avoid use of first person and second person. Do not use clichés or contractions. Be
mindful of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. Since this is a sophomore level
college course, your writing will be assessed according to sophomore level college
standards.
Beware of summarization!!! You don’t want to re-tell the plot!!!
“Thanatopsis”
 Analyze the role of nature in “Thanatopsis” as it relates to the theme. What
was the poem designed to do? Did it achieve its purpose? To avoid a
description or plot summary, the thesis should contain a conclusion,
evaluation, or interpretation of the role of nature that connects to the opinion
on the poem’s theme.
American Identity
 Analyze the shifting American ideals from Revolutionary Literature to
Romantic Literature. To avoid simply describing or plot summary, the
assertion in the thesis needs to include some conclusion, evaluation, or
interpretation of the American Identity as demonstrated in the works read in
the class. What aspects of American Identity have changed? How has the
identity been affected by changing political, religious, and social systems?
What do these aspects reveal about the new American character? At least
two works should be used to support the conclusions.
American Hero
 Analyze the American hero that has developed in either Revolutionary
Literature or American Romanticism. What type of hero populates the nation
now? How does this reflect the new America and the new direction of the
country? What does it now take to be successful in this new nation? Is this
positive or negative? To avoid plot or description, the assertion in the thesis
needs to include some conclusion, evaluation, or interpretation of the
American Hero that will be developed in the analysis of the hero based on the
literature chosen for the paper.
