ENG3111 – Technology Design Project

Activity – Week 1

At USQ, the Course Specification provides information on each course approved for the University’s teaching program. The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. You are strongly advised to prepare a checklist of these objectives so that you can refer to it as you complete all of the assessment items for this course.

Task 1

Information literacy is an essential skill for the Engineer and Technologist. In this task you are required to demonstrate your emerging skills in this area whilst reviewing material that you will later use in your team design project.

  1. 1. Read the article The Difference between an Inventor and an Entrepreneur – The Entrepreneurial Mind published by the Australian Institute for Commercialisation: http://www.ausicom.com/news-505-the-difference-between-an-inventor-and-an-

entrepreneur-the-entrepreneurial-mind

Summarize, in your own words, the main thrust of the article.

  1. 2. Among other things, Standards are important in order to specify standard work methods, procedures, and interoperability of devic You can access Australian Standards via the USQ library http://library.usq.edu.au/ by selecting Library Catalog then Search Databases, then finding “Standards On-Line Premium”, and finally “Access this eResource”.  Make sure you log out (Subscription Logout at the lower left) when you have finished, as the number of concurrent accesses are limited and if you stay logged in, you will prevent others from using it.

Find each of the following standards:

  • AS 1055
  • AS 4744
  • AS/NZS 2845
  • AS/NZS 2341
  • AS/NZS 5033
  • AS/NZS IEC 60825

Determine the name of the standard, and write a brief description in your own words about what the standard covers, and why it may be relevant to a graduate of the bachelor of engineering technology/engineering science program.

Task 2

You will be required to write technical reports as part of this course. Access each of the websites below and write a sentence or two about the content of each, and whether they may be able to help you.

Find two other websites which cover writing, spelling and grammar, which you think might also be of use to you, and explain why.

Task 3

  1. 1. Access the following sites on referencing and plagiarism:

plagiarism

then search for academic misconduct

According to the above, what is the difference between collaboration and collusion?

  1. 2. Access the IEEE Xplore publication database via the USQ library  http://library.usq.edu.au/ by selecting Search a Database, then IEEE Xplo
