Creative problem solving thrives when there is chaos. When the normal has broken down and the standard solution will not work, that is when creative problem solving comes into play. I work as a Search and Rescue specialist with the US Coast Guard. Most of our searches are easy to plan and execute. However, there are times when we have little to no information to go on and this is when experience and creative problem solving come into play. Where to search, how to search that area effectively, what resource to use are some of the aspects that come into play.

I would think that in the a manufacturing plant that when a line goes down, how do we complete the order on time so we don’t miss a deadline would be a fairly common scenario where creative problem solving would come into play.

After reading the text on creative problem solving I think it depends on the situation. If a company uses small groups to accomplish the work you could be in incubation or investment type. If the problem solving structure has teams competing to solve the same problem then it would be investment type. If employees are being empowered to solve complex problems as a team then this would be the incubation type. The other types imagination and improvement types depend on if something new or something better is required. Based on these examples I believe that most of the creative problem solving occurs when people are comfortable with the people they are working with and feel free to share without fear of being made fun of. I have seen allot of problems solved at lunch or on break. The overall thing that effects any kind of problem solving is that the manager should promote it by excepting ideas and actually considering them. If you shut a person down once, they will not provide again, from what I have seen.
